The identity of the Masked Raider will finally be revealed in the fifth and final issue of Defenders.

CBR has an exclusive look at the cover of Defenders #5, written by Al Ewing and illustrated by Javier Rodríguez. "Defenders has been a really fun ride to go on and seeing the gorgeous psychedelic visions Javier's created to tell this story has done a lot to reaffirm my faith in comics," said Ewing. "#5 is a very special issue because we finally get to resolve a plot point that's been bubbling since Marvel #1000 -- who is the Masked Raider? The answer may surprise you, true believers -- it definitely surprised us!"

Masked Raider revealed on the cover of Defenders 5 by Javier Rodriguez

DEFENDERS #5 (OF 5)

  • AL EWING (W) • JAVIER RODRÍGUEZ (A/C)
  • Doctor Strange’s ragtag Defenders face their final trial in the Third Cosmos, where the concepts of good and evil are locked in primal, eternal conflict. When the Masked Raider’s identity is finally revealed, will the truth be their salvation…or their undoing?

The Masked Raider mantle dates back to 1939's Marvel Comics #1. Created by Ewing and Mike Deodato Jr, the newest incarnation of the character debuted in Marvel Comics #1000, when a mysterious person picked up the Eternity Mask, which grants the wearer the powers of anybody they look at. That story planted the first seeds for Defenders, with the Masked Raider joining Doctor Strange's eclectic group of heroes earlier this year.

Defenders follows a team assembled by Doctor Strange that takes on extraordinary threats to the Marvel Universe. Over the course of the title's run, the team has crossed paths with magical monsters, cosmic entities and even Galactus's mother. Now, the Defenders' deepest secrets will come to light as they're put on trial for their actions. And while the book has featured many obscure characters, the revelation of the Masked Raider's true identity has the potential to rock the team to its core.

Since appearing in the pages of Marvel Premiere in 1971, the Defenders have been a staple of the Marvel Universe. Created by Roy Thomas and Ross Andru, the team traditionally centers around Doctor Strange, with other notable members including the Hulk, the Silver Surfer and Namor The Sub-Mariner. For a time, the Defenders moniker was repurposed for Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones, off of the success of the Defenders Netflix series of the same name.
