Debris, Gunfire, Screaming Extras On Cleveland Set Of The Avengers

While all eyes have been on Pittsburgh for the filming The Dark Knight Rises, about 130 miles away production has gotten under way on The Avengers in Cleveland, where the intersection East Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue is serving as a debris-strewn stand-in for New York City’s 42nd Street.

According to The Plain Dealer, filming of a “battle scene” was set to begin at 7 this morning, but was forced inside by heavy rain. Production picked back up outside at about 10:30 a.m. when, as you can see in the video below, extras ran screaming down the street amid smoke, screeching police cars and the sounds of gunfire.

The newspaper reports a “strafing scene” and an explosion are planned for this afternoon. Exterior scenes featuring the central cast are expected to be filmed on East Ninth Street all week.

Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston and Stellan Skarsgård. It opens on May 4, 2012.
