Ohba and Obata published the original Death Note manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 2003 to May 2006, producing 12 volumes worth of content. The story focuses on teenage genius Light Yagami, who discovers a mysterious book that grants him the power to kill anyone by writing their name in its pages. He attempts to use his god-like new power to rid the world of crime by massacring criminals across the globe. Over 30 million copies of the series have been sold, and according to a survey by the Ministry of Culture of Japan, it is considered one of the best manga of all time.

Animation studio Madhouse (Overlord) adapted Death Note into an anime, which premiered in October 2006. It was directed by Tetsuro Araki (Bubble) with Toshiki Inoue (Yu-Gi-Oh!) overseeing series composition and Masaru Kitao (Cardcaptor Sakura) designing the characters. It starred Mamoru Miyano (Bungo Stray Dogs) as Light, Kappei Yamaguchi (Inuyasha) as L and Aya Hirano (Dragon Ball Super) as Misa Amane.

Ohba and Obata have been busy working on more than just Death Note Short Stories; they recently completed another manga series, titled Platinum End, which ran in Shueisha's Jump Square from November 2015 to January 2021. Like Death Note, it explores the theme of godhood; the story follows Mirai Kakehashi, a student who is forced into a deadly tournament to become the new God.

Platinum End has also been adapted into an anime, which debuted as part of 2021's fall anime season. It stars Miyu Irino (Haikyu!!) and Yui Ogura (Black Clover) as Mirai and his guardian angel Nasse, respectively. Moreover, the series has already received an English dub, which features the voices of Alejandro Saab (Drifting Dragons) and Anne Yatco (Violet Evergarden).

Death Note Short Stories is currently available for pre-order on Amazon, and Platinum End and the original Death Note anime can be streamed on Funimation, Crunchyroll and Hulu.
