Death Note is one of the most popular manga stories ever made. After Light Yagami picks up a notebook dropped by a Shinigami named Ryuk, he kills criminals by writing their names in it so he can make the world a better place. Keeping his identity a secret, the world calls him "Kira." Throughout the series, other characters write names in his notebook and obtain notebooks of their own, turning Kira into a group of people.
Due to its title, readers could assume that many of the characters would die. It can be hard for even the most diehard fans to remember all of the people killed in the series. Here are 10 deaths in Death Note fans may have long forgotten.
10 Ooi
Ooi was one of the most active Yotsuba members, often being seen as the leader of the group. Some fans believed him to be the Kira who had the notebook while Light and Misa lost their memories. When Higuchi was revealed to be that Kira and the task force met Rem, Light got his memory back and tricked Rem into killing L. Shortly after, he got rid of all the members of Yotsuba, including Ooi.
9 Namikawa
Another member of Yotsuba was Namikawa. To catch L, he and the other members hired Eraldo Coil. However, as Eraldo Coil was an alias that L used, he and the task force could easily get information and money from the group. To prevent Yotsuba from killing anyone for a while, Light pretended to be L and called Namikawa, who he guessed wasn't the actual killer. Torn between being on L or Kira's side, Namikawa played an important role in this series' arc and died with Ooi and the other Yotsuba members.
8 Jack
After learning of L's death, Mello, one of the detective's successors, joined the mafia to get the notebook that killed his idol. Jack was one of the members of the mafia and became the owner of Sidoh's notebook.
When learning about the Shinigami Eyes, Jack was forced by the other members to make the trade. Many other mafia members were murdered a minute before the task force entering their hideout to get the notebook back.
7 Rod
Another member of the mafia to be killed by Kira was the leader, Rod Ross. After Mello joined them, he quickly earned Rod's trust, despite only using the mafia to get the notebook before Near could. Rod believed everything that Mello told him and saw him as an invaluable group member, unlike the other members. He was killed at the same time as Jack.
6 Steve
Though having a major role in the Kira case, Steve is a very forgettable character. He was the man that sent Raye Penber and the other eleven FBI agents to Japan. After they were killed, Steve refused to help L. However, he ended up working with Near and helped create the SPK. Most of its members, including Steve, died to the notebook after it was handed to the mafia.
5 Takimura
Takimura was the NPA's leader. After the mafia kidnapped him and got some information from him about the task force members, they planned on using him to get the notebook. When he committed suicide, the mafia kidnapped Light's sister, Sayu. They used both Takimura and Sayu for the task force to give them the notebook.
4 Wedy
After the task force and the police separated from one another, L was finally able to get help from criminals he knew, including Wedy. She was a thief and was used in the Kira case to help the others spy on Yotsuba members.
Due to her skills as a burglar and her use of a gun, some of the task force members hesitated to join the group, especially Soichiro. After L died, Light killed her in a motorcycle accident. Her real name was Mary Kenwood.
3 Aiber
Like Wedy, Aiber joined the task force once L was able to use his connections with criminals. Aiber was a con man who was very dedicated to L for all that the detective had done for him. He pretended to be Eraldo Coil and tricked Yotsuba into giving him a lot of money to track L down. He also pretended to be a member of Yotsuba when the group interviewed Misa. Due to the two practicing beforehand, they easily manipulated their enemies into trusting them even more. Light killed him by giving him liver cancer, and he died beside his family at a hospital in Paris. His real name was Thierry Morello.
2 Beyond Birthday
Though he never appeared in the main series, Beyond Birthday was one of the most interesting characters in Death Note's universe due to being an orphan from Wammy's House, born with the Shinigami Eyes. Fans may recall Naomi Misora telling Light that she had worked with L at one point in her career. She had also worked with Beyond Birthday and was shocked to find out that he was the murderer they were seeking. After L's first potential successor, A, committed suicide, Beyond Birthday refused to become the next L and decided to challenge the detective. With his Shinigami Eyes, he killed people at the moment they were destined to die. After he was caught, he died in prison due to a heart attack.
1 Ukita
When most police officers decided not to go after Kira, L finally revealed his identity to the remaining members, believing he could trust them. From that group, fans easily remember Soichiro, Aizawa, Matsuda, and Mogi. However, Ukita was also part of the investigation. When Misa used Sakura TV to speak as the Second Kira, the task force was determined to end the broadcast. Ukita rushed to the studio to stop it. However, Misa was watching the entrance of the studio and used her Shinigami Eyes to kill him. Though he wasn't in the series for long, he was an important member of the task force, and his death gave L more clues to finding Kira.
