WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Justice League #56 by Joshua Williamson, Robson Rocha, Daniel Henriques, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Tom Napolitano, on sale now.

The resistance against Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs during the crossover event Dark Nights: Death Metal has seen Wonder Woman step up to take a leadership role against the Dark Multiverse conquerors. Diana Prince's prominence in the event includes mounting a desperate last stand on Themyscira and striking down the Batman Who Laughs with her newly forged Chainsaw of Truth.

And as a new Justice League is formed in the hellish reality of Death Metal, the Amazon superhero has gifted the ragtag team with a powerful weapon by upgrading a Silver Age DC hero: Comet the Super-Horse.

Detective Chimp Comet Death Metal

Comet was introduced by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and Curt Swan in 1962's Adventure Comics #293 who was the equine member of the Legion of Super-Pets. Often paired with Supergirl, Comet was eventually revealed to be a centaur in Ancient Greece named Biron who was transformed by Circe into a full horse and granted immortality as he survived into modern-day. While Comet was initially written out of continuity by Crisis on Infinite Earths, a radically reimagined iteration of the character was introduced by Peter David and Leonard Kirk in 1997's Supergirl #14, though was largely sidelined after Infinite Crisis.

The opening of Justice League's tie-in storyline with Death Metal revealed that Wonder Woman had forged a new version of Comet for Nightwing as his riding mount, reimagining the trusty steed as a robotic horse. Already shown to be a formidable weapon, Detective Chimp discovers a new capability that Nightwing had been unaware of when he rode the robotic Comet. Recalling that Nightwing explained his mount was forged by Wonder Woman on Themyscira, the crimefighting simian deduces that Diana Prince had used part of her Invisible Jet to create the robotic horse, as she had with her Chainsaw of Truth at the start of the crossover event.

With this in mind, Chimp is able to trigger a feature on the horse that hadn't been seen before: Cloaking functionality. Fueled by the components from the Invisible Jet, Chimp turns Comet invisible and charges headfirst into the fray without being noticed by the Dark Mindhunter or the Omega Knight guarding Perpetua's throne against the assembled superheroes. With this feature, Chimp is able to maneuver himself directly between the Omega Knight and the throne, with the Omega Knight tricked into destroying the throne with a massive cosmic blast, cutting off one of Perpetua's most valuable sources of power, albeit at the cost of Detective Chimp's life in his sacrificial gambit.

In forging Comet the Super-Horse in the fires of Themyscira with materials salvaged from her Invisible Jet, Wonder Woman inadvertently gave the Death Metal Justice League its most pivotal weapon in accomplishing their crucial mission. Without the cloaking function on Comet fueled by its Invisible Jet components, Detective Chimp would not have been able to evade the Dark Knights watching over Perpetua's throne and line himself up perfectly between the target and the Omega Knight. Although Comet's usage may have simply seemed like a repurposed nod to the Silver Age, he has proven itself to be a particularly prominent part of the Justice League's battle against the Dark Knights as the heroes seek to overthrow the Dark Multiverse invaders' rule once and for all.
