WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Dark Nights: Death Metal: Speed Metal #1 by Joshua Williamson, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Adriano Lucas and Steve Wands, on sale now.

In Dark Nights: Death Metal, the Batman Who Laughs was killed by Wonder Woman, but he was gone for a very short amount of time. After his death, his followers brought him back inside the body of the Batmanhattan, a version of Bruce Wayne from the Dark Multiverse who had Doctor Manhattan's abilities. The villain was then reborn as the Darkest Knight, taking on the appearance of a dark, nightmarish monster.

Shortly after this transformation, there was only one thing left for the villain to do: steal Wally West's Anti-Crisis Energy. Only then will he be powerful enough to defeat Perpetua, the Mother of the Multiverse, herself. But before he can do that, he'll have to catch him first.

Now, in Speed Metal #1, the race between the Batman Who Laughs and Wally is on. And, as a result, three members of the Flash Family end up getting twisted new costumes.

Speed Metal #1 picks up right where Dark Nights: Death Metal #3 left off: Barry Allen, Wally West and Jay Garrick are running through the Speed Force, and they are being chased by the Batman Who Laughs. Soon, the trio of speedsters is joined by another member of the Flash Family: Wallace West, aka Kid Flash.

The villain hovers behind them as a massive specter, while his army of Dark Flashes threatens to kill all four superheroes. The energy involved in this particular race threatens to tear the Speed Force itself apart, and the quartet of speedsters are nearly out of options if they have any hope of stopping the villain from getting access to the Anti-Crisis Energy.

Thankfully, Wally uses a secret weapon in the form of Johnny Quick's Speed =Formula. This allows him to briefly stop time inside the Speed Force, which in turn permits Jay, Barry, Wally and Wallace to come up with a plan to run back in the other direction to secure the Mobius Chair.

Before they head back, however, a purple burst of energy hits Jay, Wallace and Barry, and all of them are briefly overtaken with tremendous pain. Once they recover, they find that they are all wearing twisted new costumes.

Death Metal Speed Metal Flash Costumes

Wallace's costume is red, silver and black, and it looks a lot like the future costume he wore in the New 52. However, here, it comes with an extra dose of spikes to show that this new look is born of something evil. The case is the same for Barry Allen, who gets a spiked red and black costume that visually evokes his time as the Black Flash.

Meanwhile, Jay Garrick's look gets a modern, metal spin that gives him a biker-inspired jacket, chains, and face paint that ends his lightning logo.

These new looks, however, are not of the speedsters' making. They come as a byproduct of the Batman Who Laughs, who is putting pressure on the Speed Force and using his great power to corrupt it. Since the Speed Force is what allows the speedsters to create costumes for themselves, it's corruption changes the appearances of these speedsters.

This corruption of the Speed Force might give these Flashes metal new looks, but it thankfully doesn't change who they are. All four speedsters continue to run, and they're fast enough to keep the Batman Who Laughs from taking the Mobius Chair again, and they look perfect for their part in this twisted world.
