For about ten years, the CW has been the home of the DC Arrowverse, named after being jumpstarted by the Green Arrow adaptation Arrow. Ever since, the shared television universe has expanded into several different shows, many of which have gained a steadfast fanbase. Unfortunately, as the universe is about to turn a decade old, it may be time to finally close the curtain.

The current plan to sell the CW, along with the Arrowverse itself becoming rather long in the tooth, are good reasons to begin ending the shared universe. By setting an official funeral date, the network would allow the most long-lived shows to come to an organic close, ensuring that the goodbye is anything but bittersweet.

Why the Arrowverse Needs to End

For one thing, the Arrowverse, despite its many fans, has just as many detractors, especially in terms of hardcore DC Comics fans. Many have been disappointed that classic characters such as The Flash and Green Arrow are stuck in what they deem to be mere "soap operas," ones which many times play fast and loose with fidelity to the source material. It doesn't help that, in being on the CW, the budgets for these shows, let alone the acting and production values, usually leave much to be desired. To add insult to injury, the more recent HBO Max shows are of much higher quality and reception, both among fans and critics.

Even for beloved shows such as The Flash, their best years are most definitely behind them, with many fans actually clamoring for the show to end. Given that Arrow itself is now over, it only makes sense for the other long-lived shows to begin winding down as well. On top of all of this, there's the CW network itself. Recently revealed as having been placed up for grabs by Warner Bros. and Viacom, the network as fans know it is not long for this world. These reports also suggest that the pending buyout will result in a culling of the network's original content, much as Supernatural and Smallville were the few survivors when the CW rebranded itself from the WB. If these original shows are only going to get canceled unceremoniously anyway, why not go ahead and just end them on a high note?

How the CW Could Kill the Arrowverse

For one thing, as mentioned, shows like The Flash and even Legends of Tomorrow are way past their sell date, and their next seasons should be produced as their last. This way, any loose ends can be tied up while the cast, crew and viewers go into things knowing that this is the end. If The Flash, especially, comes to a close, it'll be the shutting of the door for the Arrowverse's initial generation. Batwoman has been a show that's been pretty maligned (whether unfairly or otherwise) since its inception, and given its continued debacles and controversies, few will be heartbroken over it ending its run.

Superman & Lois and Stargirl could easily just transition to HBO Max, as they're essentially more of that network's shows than the CW's. Given how unrelated and cut off from the rest of the Arrowverse they are anyway, it'd make sense that they survive the destruction of the shared universe programming block. Lastly, the supposedly planned new Arrowverse shows such as Justice U and the Gotham Knights TV series should be scrapped outright, as they're unlikely to go too far into production under the new management. By doing all of this, the CW would be able to give a fitting farewell to its decade-long bread and butter while paving the way for new ventures.
