Galaxy Quest director Dean Parisot is in final negotiations to direct the sequel to RED, Summit Entertainment’s hit 2010 action-comedy, Variety reports.
Loosely based on the DC Comics miniseries by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, RED — it’s an acronym for “retired, extremely dangerous” — starred Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich as former CIA agents targeted for assassination because of the secrets they know. Directed by Robert Schwentke, the $60 million movie exceeded box-office expectations, grossing nearly $200 million worldwide.
Although no deals are in place, all four stars are expected to return for the sequel, which is set to open Aug. 2, 2013. Brothers Erich and Jon Hoeber, who penned the screenplay for the original, also wrote the one for the follow-up, which reportedly finds the retirees facing a new set of enemies across Europe.
