After nearly a decade of rumors that have raised the hopes of fans, only to send them crashing back down, HBO has confirmed the fabled "Deadwood" movie is in development. For real.

TVLine reports HBO programming president Michael Lombardo has greenlit creator David Milch's plan to resurrect the critically acclaimed Western. "He pitched what he thought generally the storyline would be — and knowing David, that could change," Lombardo said Thursday at the Television Critics Association's press tour party. "But it’s going to happen.”

However, questions remain about when it will happen -- Milch has another project in the works -- and whether all of the now very in demand principal cast members will be able to participate. “I’m going to leave that in David’s hands,” Lombardo said. “He’s confident he will be able to."

HBO confirmed in August that there had been "very preliminary discussions" about a TV movie after "Deadwood" alum Garret Dillahunt revealed he'd heard "credible rumors” about the project.

Airing from 2004 to 2006, the drama starred Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Molly Parker, John Hawkes and Kim Dickens, and chronicled the rise of Deadwood, South Dakota, from a mining camp to town.
