HBO's Deadwood Movie Begins Production With Returning Cast

Principal photography has begun on the long-awaited Deadwood television film, closing out story of the acclaimed HBO Western.

After more than a decade of rumors and false starts, HBO's eagerly anticipated Deadwood film has officially begun principal photography in Los Angeles.

The project reunites much of the Emmy Award-winning Western's original cast, including Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant and Molly Parker as the denizens of the titular South Dakota frontier town. The Deadwood veterans are joined by new addition Jade Pettyjohn, who will play a character named Caroline.

While details on the film's story are under wraps, it will reportedly see the characters return to Deadwood 10 years following the conclusion of the final season to celebrate South Dakota's statehood. As they reunite, they quickly find themselves embroiled in the same bloody rivalries that they faced a decade earlier.

Deadwood aired on HBO for three seasons, from 2004 to 2006, and won eight Emmys before being canceled because of low ratings and high production costs. Rumors of television films closing out the series' story had been teased for years before the revival was officially greenlit in July by HBO.

Directed by Dan Minahan from a script by series creator David Milch, Deadwood stars Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, Molly Parker, Paula Malcomson, John Hawkes, Anna Gunn, Dayton Callie, Brad Dourif, Robin Weigert, William Sanderson, Kim Dickens, Jade Pettyjohn and Gerald McRaney. It is expected to air on HBO in spring 2019.
