WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Cable #3 by Gerry Duggan, Phil Noto, & VC's Joe Sabino, on sale now.

Deadpool doesn't really have much in the way of scruples. The Merc with a Mouth is willing to do pretty much anything for a friend--or for a laugh. His latest act might seem to be one of his most despicable yet, but in reality, it came at the request of perhaps Deadpool's favorite X-Man.

As Cable #3 reveals, Wade Wilson stole the body of the late, original Cable. As underhanded as that sounds, the body theft was actually a favor. Cable's final request was for Deadpool to steal his body if he ever died. However, Deadpool did something with his unlikely friend's body that was not on Cable's agenda.

While confronting the Space-Knights over the Light of Galador -- the mysterious sword he found and has taken as his own--Cable tries to arrange a bargain with them: in exchange for him altering the past so the Space-Knights can save their world, they won't start a conflict with Earth and will allow him to keep his blade. Reasoning that the easiest place to find a time-travel device is within the body of his fallen older counterpart, Cable goes to find where the X-Men buried the older version of himself. When they arrive, however, they discover that someone has already desecrated the grave and stolen the body. The left-over taco bags make it pretty clear that it was Deadpool who took the body.

Confronting Deadpool on his new monster kingdom of Staten Island, Cable is quick to figure out that Deadpool robbed Cable's grave and stole his body. But it turns out that he did this at Cable's explicit request. After fighting against Stryfe, Cable secretly sent Deadpool a sincere letter, asking his unlikely best friend a specific favor upon the eventuality of his death: If and when he died, Deadpool was to take possession of his body, even if he was buried by the X-Men. The technology within Cable -- such as his time-travel device -- is too dangerous to leave lying around for someone to claim. Instead, the X-Force leader asked Deadpool to watch over the body, which he did.

And in true Deadpool fashion, he kept the body in his rec room and tried to have the body taxidermied. When no one was willing to do that, Deadpool encased the body in lucite and turned into a billiards table.

Cable and Deadpool were initially enemies -- Deadpool's very first appearance was even in opposition to Cable and the his-then charges, the New Mutants in Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza's New Mutants #98. But the two eventually were forced to work together, which eventually led to a reluctant partnership in Cable & Deadpool. The two slowly became increasingly close as that series continued, with the pair of them eventually settling into surprising roles as best friends. No one could annoy Cable more than Deadpool and his antics, and no one could enrage Deadpool more with their moral superiority than Cable. But the two found a kinship that has lasted, even though the various time-traveling adventures Cable has gone on since.

The letter Cable sends to Deadpool actually takes note that Cable's greatest advantage over his enemies isn't his arsenal of weapons or his incredible mutant powers. In reality, his greatest strength comes from his friends and family, a group that includes Deadpool. It's an incredibly sweet gesture from Cable. Deadpool follows through, in his own manic way. Even attempting to preserve Cable's body could be seen as Deadpool's attempt to save his friend until he returns, something Cable specifically mentions in the letter to Deadpool. This serves the young Cable well though because it allows him to rip off the cybernetic arm to present to the Space-Knights. While the new Cable and Deadpool are currently at each other's throats, Deadpool clearly has an interest in recreating the friendship he had with the more mature version of Cable.
