Warning: The following contains spoilers for Deadpool: Black, White & Blood #1, on sale now from Marvel.

Considering his erratic and unstable behavior, it's hard to call Deadpool a hero. Even those who've worked alongside Wade Wilson in the past have a hard time trusting and relying on him. In Deadpool: Black, White & Blood #1, by Tom Taylor, Phil Noto and VC's Joe Sabino, however, Deadpool found his perfect sidekick in Laura Kinney's younger sister, Scout.

Wade and Gabby work together in the short story "Red All Over," in order to investigate experimentation on animals. Specifically, Deadpool calls Scout in to help him fight off a zombified zebra, wreaking havoc in the streets. Gabby is eager to help, charging in alongside Wade to stop the wild animal. After stopping the zebra, Deadpool and Scout decide to confront the head of Palmive Industries, the company that experimented on these mistreated animals in the first place. Overall, this short story builds upon an existing bond and strong friendship that Wade and Gabby have built over the past few years.

Deadpool calling Scout for help in Deadpool Black White and Blood #1

Deadpool and Scout first met in 2017's All-New Wolverine #21, by Tom Taylor, Leonard Kirk, Cory Hamscher, Terry Pallot, Michael Garland and VC's Cory Petit. Wade was among a group of people with healing factors who arrived on Roosevelt Island, alongside Laura and Gabby Kinney, to stop an alien virus. Upon meeting each other, Wade and Gabby became fast friends. To Deadpool's surprise, Scout wasn't phased at all by his scars. Similarly, Wade didn't have a problem with Gabby's scars either. Immediately after this exchange, the two declared themselves best friends. After they stopped the virus, Gabby even gifted Wade with one of her fingers.

Although this was a rather strange gift, Deadpool was very touched, highlighting their similarly unusual personalities. Gabby later called on Wade for help, in 2018's All-New Wolverine #31, by Tom Taylor, Marco Fallia, Nolan Woodard and VC's Cory Petit. The two best friends teamed up to take down yet another laboratory, experimenting on animals. The fact that Gabby called Deadpool illustrated a strong bond between the two, just as Deadpool's immediate response to Gabby's call demonstrated their close relationship.

At the end of the day, Deadpool and Gabby are so close due to their similarly traumatic experiences. Both have been experimented upon in the past, a fact which has been highlighted by their physical scars and their eagerness to shut down laboratories involved in human and animal experimentation. Wade definitely sees some of himself in Gabby.

Deadpool and Scout talking about their shared experiences in Deadpool Black White and Blood #1

This is clear at the end of "Red All Over," when he and Gabby bond in remorse over yet another creature made in a lab to be a monster. Moreover, Wade protects Gabby by letting her free the remaining zebras from Palmive Industries, while he kills the head of the company. It's nice that Deadpool is so protective of Scout, as he'd rather Gabby enjoy freeing the animals than take part in murder. Deadpool looks out for Scout, not only because they share similar trauma, but also because she's been so kind to him in the past. At the beginning of "Red All Over," for example, Spider-Man and Wolverine ignore Deadpool as soon as he calls them. Scout, however, answers immediately, jumping to her friend's side.

Gabby has been more open and accepting of Deadpool than most heroes, who usually take a great deal of time to warm up to him. Even then, these heroes, like Spider-Man or Wolverine, wouldn't normally want to hang out with Wade, like Gabby would. When the zombie zebra bites Wade, Gabby goes so far as to cut off Deadpool's hand, so he isn't infected. Even though Wade's healing powers would have helped him anyways, Deadpool appreciates this, showing how the two are on a similar wavelength. Both Deadpool and Scout have rather chaotic personalities, and they've both gone through a great deal of trauma, making them into a perfect pair of friends.
