Although the Golden Globes eluded them, "Deadpool" and Ryan Reynolds walked away Wednesday night with a pair of People's Choice Awards, for Favorite Action Movie and Favorite Actor. Next up: the Academy Awards.

"Captain America: Civil War" star Robert Downey Jr. was honored as Favorite Action Movie Actor, and "Suicide Squad" star Margot Robbie as Favorite Action Movie Actress. AMC's "The Walking Dead" also lumbered away with the trophy for Favorite Cable Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show.
"Power to the people! Stick it to the man!" Downey said while accepting his sixth People's Choice Award. "I'm very grateful for this, and I'm glad you all enjoy watching these big, fun movies as much as I enjoy making them. I'm constantly motivated and inspired by the fans and the families the world over. [...] Arthur Conan Doyle gave us Sherlock, Stan Lee created Iron Man, and so part of my life's mission is to ensure that these action heroes are properly rendered for your viewing pleasure."

As their name suggests, the People's Choice Awards are decided by online voting of the entertainment-consuming public. For the past seven years, the nominees have been determined by a media research company that measure audience behavior while watching online videos. This year winners were selected in 64 categories -- across film, television, music and digital -- but only a fraction of those were presented during Wednesday's telecast on CBS.
In the Favorite Action Movie category, "Deadpool" beat out fellow superhero films "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," "Captain America: Civil War," "Suicide Squad" and "X-Men: Apocalypse."
The People's Choice Awards are by no means a predictor of the Academy Awards, but they do add to the growing list of honors earned this year by "Deadpool" and Reynolds: They received Critics' Choice Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy and Best Comedy, and were nominated for Best Picture, Comedy or Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy but ultimately lost to "La La Land" and its star Ryan Gosling. In addition, "Deadpool" is nominated for a Producers Guild of America Award, with director Tim Miller receiving a nod for the Directors Guild Award, and its screenplay for a Writers Guild Award.
Oh, and "Deadpool" was the most-pirated film of 2016 -- a dubious honor, but an honor nonetheless.
