A man who illegally streamed Deadpool on Facebook faces up to six months in prison. The US Government is recommending that California resident Trevor Franklin be sentenced to a six month prison sentence for his crime.

In early 2016, Franklin uploaded a pirated copy of Deadpool to Facebook only a week after the movie premiered in theaters. Though he shared it, he didn’t make the original rip of the movie. The pirated copy was viewed over six million times in just a few days. Copyright holder 20th Century Fox contacted the federal authorities, who arrested Franklin for the crime in the summer of 2016.

Authorities cited his blatant disregard for copyright laws and the many posts that warned him to take down the movie before he was caught. Franklin had even set up a Facebook account called “BOOTLEG MOVIES” that the government contends he was planning to use as a platform to share more pirated films.

Franklin signed a plea deal and pleaded guilty to a Class A misdemeanor, which could carry up to a year in prison. However, his recommended sentence has been scaled back due to his cooperation with the authorities. His defense attorney has argued that the sentence be reduced to one year on probation, saying, “Such a sentence would be sufficient, but not greater than necessary, in light of Mr. Franklin’s tumultuous personal history, remorse for the offense, and his continued desire to redirect his life.”
