"Deadpool" Officially Highest-Grossing X-Men Film, R-Rated Comic Book Film Ever

After just two weeks of release, "Deadpool" has surpassed all expectations to assert box office dominance with a number of records. Now, the Ryan Reynolds-starring, Tim Miller-directed feature can add a few more notches to its katana, as it's just become the highest-grossing film in the X-Men franchise, as well as the highest-grossing R-rated comic book movie ever.

Domestically, "Deadpool" has pulled in $235.39 million, putting it just above "X-Men: The Last Stand" ($234.36) according to Box Office Mojo. If you adjust for inflation, it actually comes in fifth behind "X-Men: Days of Future Past" ($244.76 million), "X-Men" ($253.90 million), "X2: X-Men United" ($310.13 million), and "The Last Stand" ($311.29 million); however, "Deadpool" still has plenty of time left in its theatrical release to continue raking in the dough.

Worldwide, the film still has a ways to go before it reaches "Days of Future Past's" unadjusted gross of $747.9 million, but at $491.9 million thus far, it's certinaly on a very comfortable pace. Its current global earnings put it ahead of every X-film save "Days of Future Past."

In an equally impressive feat, "Deadpool" is also officially the highest-grossing R-rated comic book movie of all time, successfully passing both "300's" domestic ($210 million) and worldwide ($456 million) numbers. The movie places an impressive sixth on the list of all-time domestic gross for an R-rated feature, and could very well be on track to take the number one spot away from "The Passion of the Christ." It'll have to surpass the first two "The Hangover" films, "The Matrix Reloaded," and "American Sniper" to do so. The Merc with a Mouth currently sits at 17th on the domestic list of all comic book movie adaptations.

It's also likely that "Deadpool" will cut "Iron Man" ($318.41 million) out of the top 10 superhero movies of all time (domestic) before its done slicing up mayhem at the box office.
