It’s funny to think that Marvel’s most violent character is also their funniest. Deadpool has captured the attention of fans worldwide. He’s known for having a sense of humor that is just as sharp as his katanas. Some have even argued that comedy is one of his super powers, alongside his advanced healing factor and fighting prowess. His antics are almost always cartoonish in execution, having proven this on the many occasions he has reached into his bag of holding or has broken the fourth wall.

Deadpool has a hilarious line up of jokes. It's not uncommon for him to make a reference to something outside the confines of the Marvel universe. There are times, however, that some of those references may be lost on the audience.

10 Deadpool Knows His Science

Deadpool speaks to Reed Richards and T'Challa about science and Star Trek.

Sometimes it's intimidating to be stuck standing between two of the smartest people in the world. Wade Wilson relates to this wholeheartedly while talking to Black Panther and Reed Richards. How does he deal with it? He shows that he’s just as capable of talking shop with a couple of scientists.

His point of reference is the classic Star Trek, but well before Professor X himself was a part of the series. This, of course, is a nod to actor Patrick Stewart who played both a Starfleet captain and then the leader of the X-Men in the live action films. From his point of view, any episode before Patrick had to have been scientifically sound.

9 His Mom Has The Same Name

deadpool thinks punisher says martha

There’s nothing funny about trading shots with another mercenary. Of course the better gunslinger needs to win the fight. However, finding out their mothers share the same name might be a good enough reason to (almost) call a truce.

While fighting the Punisher, Deadpool makes a not-so-subtle nod at the once overly memed moment when Batman stops short of killing Superman in the BvS film. Somehow mishearing “Martha” from “mother” was enough to snap Deadpool out the gun fight and buy Frank Castle a few seconds to recoup.

8 Dragons Are Just As Bad As Snakes

deadpool says dragons on a boat instead of snakes on a plane

If anyone has the opportunity to do a recite a quote from Samuel L Jackson, they need to take it. Deadpool doesn’t hold back. Of course he had to change a few words to fit the situation at hand, seeing as there were no snakes nearby and he wasn’t cruising on a plane. Make a respective switch from “dragon” and “boat” and it becomes a little more obvious which movie he’s taking a line from (which is an absolute must-see). Of course, the joke loses a little of its bite thanks to Marvel tending to shy away from F-bombs.

7 When Revenge Is On The Mind

This joke doesn’t actually come directly from Deadpool, but instead came from the metal tentacled villain, Omega Red. Reading it now, it's not absolutely certain if this was an intentional joke on his part, but Deadpool is nice enough of a guy to correct him to make sure his delivery is presented as intended.

Fans of the film Princess Bride will recognize the famous quote from when Inigo Montoya fights first Westley (as the Dread Pirate Roberts) and then the six-fingered Count Tyrone Rugen. Deadpool's sometimes partner in violence, Cable, also seems to be a fan of the movie.

6 A Mountain Of A Goal

deadpool declares he wants to be hokage like naruto

Would Deadpool count as a ninja? He seems to think so, yet he continually proves the opposite when he teams up with the Iron Fist. Somehow stealth and knowledge of martial arts magic leave the equation, but this is not enough to stop him from his one true goal of being the next Hokage. His declaration would have many Naruto fans celebrating knowing that he too is a fan of the monumental Japanese series.

In the manga, Naruto is an outcast (not unlike Deadpool) who has the ultimate goal of eventually being the leader of the Hidden Leaf village. Of course, Deadpool has a great number of steps he needs to take before getting anywhere near that goal.

5 Thanks For The Spoiler

deadpool spoils game of thrones for black panther

No one likes a spoiler, not even Black Panther. It was no wonder that the normally cool cat snapped when Deadpool mentioned the ending to the Game of Thrones novels. There are a couple of interesting facts to draw from this.

First, Black Panther is a GoT fan, although it's uncertain when he’d find the time to read it while leading such a busy life. Second, one has to admire a person so completely invested in the series that they’d be willing to recreate the horrors of the Red Wedding. Even more admiration goes to the person using it to threaten Deadpool mid-fight.

4 The Originals Were The Best

deadpool talks about star wars

When it comes to Star Wars, one thing that will forever be argued is whether the films on either side of the original trilogy have ever matched up to the original three films. Deadpool is extremely set on his point of view, and directly blames Jar Jar Binks for being one of the reasons the first three episodes were not as popular.

This coincides with popular opinion at the time of release when many fans drew hatred towards the character and the franchise. However, DP would likely be a Darth Maul fan, truth be told.

3 This Will Never Not Be Funny

Many years ago, when the internet was just discovering how funny it could be, there was a man named Ben Schulz. Ben became a World of Warcraft hero in a matter of seconds when he charged head first into battle shouting out his character name, Leeroy Jenkins.

This joke is still being made to this day, and has been referenced in countless movies, TV shows, and even other games. That being said, you’d have to know the internet’s early memes to have gotten this joke. Even further, it's no surprise that Deadpool would use it as a battle cry of his own.

2 When The Heart Sings

deadpool recites lyrics of the joker by the steve miller band

One type of reference that Deadpool uses a lot is to work song lyrics into conversation, but without the benefit of hearing them, it's not always apparent he is doing so unless the reader is super familiar with the song he's referencing. Deadpool coolly “speaks of the pompatus of love” when he slips in the iconic lyrics from the Steve Miller Band song, "The Joker," only changing them to refer to himself instead. Even more of a surprise is that Spider-Man, the jokester that he is, let DP pull this one out of the hat before using the joke for himself.

1 The Unexpected One-Two Punch

Deadpool and Hawkeye joke about Freddy Krueger

Kate Bishop, aka Hawkeye, is a relatively new superhero on the block. It’s not surprising that she thought the mask-less Deadpool was sporting Freddy Krueger makeup. It’s an easy mistake to make on Halloween. The even better joke that many would not have gotten right away is Kate Bishop’s costume when she stumbles into Clint and Wade’s hangout.

It’s a bit of a wonder that Deadpool didn’t call out the fact that Marvel’s Hawkeye was dressed as the Hawkeye from the classic military comedy TV series M*A*S*H.
