Deadpool star Morena Baccarin opened up about unsuccessfully auditioning for Maria Hill in The Avengers.

Baccarin, who played Vanessa Carlysle in Deadpool and Deadpool 2, revealed she couldn't work out how to approach playing Nick Fury's right-hand woman, in an episode of Happy Sad Confused. "I didn't get it at all, I didn't get it at all," admitted Baccarin. "I love that [Joss Whedon] brought me in for [the audition]. He kept telling me she was like Sigourney Weaver in Alien, that she had this kind of hard edge to her, and I was like 'I don't understand.' I couldn't see it on the page, I couldn't do it."

The Brazilian-American actor also described auditioning alongside Cobie Smulders, who went on to play the role. "I was there with Cobie, we tested against each other and I was like, 'She's going to get this part, I can see it.' [Whedon] wanted me to be emotional but hold it all in and be hard, and I was like, 'I don't know what you're asking me to do. I can't do it.'"

After being cast in The Avengers, Smulders went on to appear as Maria Hill a further five times on the big screen, reprising the role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity WarAvengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. She also portrayed the super spy in three episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and one episode of What If...?. Smulders is set to reprise the role once again in the upcoming Secret Invasion series.

Baccarin later landed the role of Wade Wilson's love interest Vanessa in 2016's Deadpool, returning for Deadpool 2 in 2018. While her character was seemingly killed off early in the sequel, one of the film's many post-credit scenes depicts Deadpool exploiting time travel technology to save her life. As such, it’s possible that Baccarin could appear in Deadpool 3, which is currently in production.

Rumors are currently circulating that the Merc with a Mouth himself will return to screens prior to Deadpool 3 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That said, star Ryan Reynolds has dismissed speculation that he's suiting up in the red jumpsuit for the upcoming MCU blockbuster. "I'm really not in the movie," Reynolds insisted in a recent interview. "I’m promising, I’m not in the movie."

Deadpool 3 does not currently have a release date. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness arrives in theatres on May 6 and Secret Invasion will premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2022.
