The upcoming Deadpool 3 is an exciting film for several reasons, namely in that it will involve the characters from the 20th Century Fox X-Men movies. The movie still doesn't have an official title, though some think that Deadpool vs. Wolverine is the likely name. In reality, drawing from a cynical and dark storyline from the comics might inform the new movie's name.

Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe was a simple story that featured the Merc With a Mouth taking out anyone who got in his way. From the heroic Avengers to the many mutants of the X-Men, everyone falls to the whims of Wade Wilson. The new Deadpool film might be going in a similar direction, generating R-rated laughs while saying goodbye to the previous cinematic X-Men.

Deadpool 3's Title Is Far From Confirmed

Hugh Jackman Is Getting in the Best Shape of His Life for Deadpool 3

No one knows the true title of the third Deadpool movie, and it's unlikely to be simply named Deadpool 3. Outside the Iron Man movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has largely eschewed numbered titles for sequels. As mentioned, some believe that the new movie's title could reflect the conflict between Deadpool and Wolverine. Even that might be too trite, however, as it's almost expected at this point. It also shouldn't turn that possible conflict into the main selling point of the movie, when it should simply be one element of it. Still, the broader property that both Wolverine and Deadpool hail from might be able to give the movie a winning name.

Deadpool has always been an X-Men-adjacent character, and his relationship with the team has largely been tenuous at best. Thus, it's not out of the question that, even in the movies, he might turn against the people who were never really his friends. That was exactly the case in the comic book Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe, where the merry mutants gained special scorn from Wade Wilson. The fact that Marvel Studios now owns the X-Men and Fantastic Four could also see central F4 villain Psycho-Man introduced, though there might need to be changes made to the story's scope if it's adapted. For one thing, the Fantastic Four themselves have yet to be introduced into the MCU proper, thus reducing their potential role as Deadpool's victims and highlighting the need for mutant rivalry.

Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Is Itching for an Adaptation

The plot of the rather morose Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe sent the titular character to the Ravencroft Institute (a mental hospital that houses numerous Spider-Man villains) in order to heal him of his mental health issues and past trauma. Unfortunately, the doctor treating Wade Wilson is no psychiatrist, but rather the villainous Psycho-Man. This backfires, however, resulting in the Merc With a Mouth having an overwhelming drive to kill anyone and everyone. Later, Deadpool gets special vengeance toward the X-Men, though he actually thanks them for allowing Psycho-Man to tamper with his mind. Many of the X-Men are killed in a maze that Deadpool forces their former foe Arcade to build, and Deadpool's newfound lease on life allows him to redirect Professor Xavier's psychic powers. From there, Deadpool is essentially unstoppable, with his healing factor allowing him to come back and threaten everyone, including the book's reader.

Simplifying things to where the X-Men are the only ones killed by Deadpool would work, as he could be shown as killing their Fox movie universe incarnations. Likewise, it could also be a tongue-in-cheek explanation for the overall lack of mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Seeing the carnage, Wolverine steps in to stop Deadpool, resulting in a drawn out battle between the two. By the end, the TVA could get involved to undo Deadpool's rampage, with the merciless merc being sent back joking from whence he came.

Having Deadpool kill a version of what's sure to be the MCU's next big team might seem jarring, especially if it involves mean-spirited derision of the previous films. Nevertheless, such a violent end might be the best way to take advantage of the film's supposed R-rating, pulling out all the stops for what is likely the last go-round for both Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's iconic Wolverine. It might not be a deathly serious affair, but for the mutants standing in Deadpool's way, it will certainly be deadly.

Marvel Studios' Deadpool 3 will premiere on Nov. 8, 2024.
