Although Ryan Reynolds' Merc With a Mouth won't appear in "Logan," fans shouldn't rule out a Deadpool/Wolverine team-up just yet.

Following quick denials by Reynolds, "Logan" director James Mangold and star Hugh Jackman of a rumor that Deadpool has a cameo in the upcoming Fox film, The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit suggests there's still a chance the two characters could reunite on screen.

Reynolds, who's nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in "Deadpool," may have stoked the rumor of a role in "Logan" earlier this month when he revealed he wanted Wolverine and Deadpool to appear together in another film. “What we’re gonna have to do is convince Hugh," he said. "If anything, I’m going to need to do what I can to get my internet friends back on board to help rally another cause down the line.”

They of course previously appeared together in 2009's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," where the depiction of Wade Wilson later provided plenty of fodder for jokes by Reynolds and Deadpool.

Reynolds said Thursday that he still wants a Deadpool/Wolverine film, but that "'Logan' is its own unique & perfect thing. The Big Red Shit-Talker wouldn't mix with the tone."

With the box-office success of "Deadpool," and the faltering "X-Men: Apocalypse," it's likely Fox executives would be overjoyed by the prospect of a team-up. However, as Reynolds' earlier comments suggest, Jackman is probably the biggest obstacle to such a project. He's announced that "Logan" will be his ninth and final appearance as Wolverine, a role he's played since 2000's "X-Men."

Opening March 3, 2017, "Logan" also stars Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elise Neal and Elizabeth Rodriguez.
