“Deadpool” Director Tim Miller Reveals He Previously Met With DC For “Lobo”

Visual effects artist Tim Miller made his directorial debut with “Deadpool,” a modestly-budgeted R-rated superhero film based on a cult favorite character that’s so far the #1 highest-grossing movie of 2016. But, as Miller recently revealed in an interview with HitFix, the director almost made his directing debut with another R-rated superhero: DC Comics’ Lobo.

The reveal came as part of Miller’s answer to a larger question about the increased number of reports that certain superhero films are targeting R-ratings, possibly inspired by “Deadpool’s” success. Miller said that he met with those involved in the long-in-development “Lobo” years ago.

“I met on…’Lobo’ two, three years ago,” said Miller of the film, which would star DC’s tough, interstellar bounty hunter. “They had a script then. So it’s not like — and I think they even did a test for it early on. I think it’s something that filmmakers and sometimes the studios want to do [R-rated superhero movies]. They just haven’t seen that they can actually make money. And ultimately they gotta make money. So I don’t blame them for being concerned about it.”

To Miller’s larger point, “Deadpool’s” success with an R-rating was followed with news that “Wolverine 3” and “X-Force” could conceivably get R ratings. Miller also addressed DC’s “Suicide Squad,” which recently underwent reshoots to add more action. Considering that the film stars violence-prone villains and anti-heroes like “Deadpool,” Warner Bros. has had to clarify will retain its PG-13 rating.

“I don’t think ‘Suicide Squad’ did reshoots to be more like ‘Deadpool.’ I think they were just adding some additional material.”

“Deadpool” arrives on Blu-ray on May 10.
