Deadpool Animated Series From Donald Glover Heads to FXX

Following his blockbuster success in live-action with Fox's Deadpool, Marvel's Merc With a Mouth is headed to animated television.

Atlanta creator Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover will write and executive produce an animated adult action-comedy for FXX starring Deadpool. They'll also serve as showrunners.

FXX has already ordered a 10-episode first season of the untitled series, the second co-production between FX Productions and Marvel Television, following the critically acclaimed Legion. Marvel has also partnered with 20th Century Fox Television on the upcoming X-Men drama The Gifted.

“Donald Glover is an incredibly gifted and versatile artist who’ll bring the untitled Marvel’s Deadpool series to life with the same intense, singular vision as his breakout hit Atlanta,” Nick Grad, president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions, said in a statement. “With the success of Legion, we’re looking forward to again partnering with Marvel Television to create a series that is bold, striking and entirely original.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a writers' room has already been set up in London, where Donald Glover is busy shooting his role as young Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo Star Wars anthology film.

Created in 1991 by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, Deadpool has not only been a mainstay of Marvel comic books, but also a somewhat familiar face in animation, with appearances on X-Men: The Animated Series, Marvel Anime: X-Men, Ultimate Spider-Man, Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers and Hulk Vs Wolverine. But of course the character rocketed to international stardom in 2016 with the live-action film Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds, which grossed $783 million worldwide. A sequel is targeted for release on June 1, 2018.

Glover is no stranger to Marvel superheroes, having provided the voice of Miles Morales on Disney XD's Ultimate Spider-Man. He also has a role in the upcoming live-action reboot Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Marvel's Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory will join Donald Glover and Stephen Glover on the Deadpool series as executive producers.
