While the cinematic fate of Wade Wilson was long left up in the air following Disney's acquisition of Fox's assets, it's now been confirmed that Marvel Studios will indeed produce Deadpool 3, which will once again feature star Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. For now, no details about the film have been revealed. In fact, we are still uncertain if the movie, which will be written by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or in the universe originally established by Fox's X-Men films.

Given the title is Deadpool 3, it seems like the latter might be the case. And if Deadpool 3 really is a continuation of its two predecessors, then there is one thing the movie needs to do above all else: finally pay off a storyline the franchise has built up for many years by pitting Wade Wilson against Mister Sinister.

Essex Corp briefcase

The threat of Mister Sinister has been teased in Fox's X-Men films for several years now through the use of his company, Essex Corp. The corporation first appeared in the after-credits scene of 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse. It was also was picked up in 2017's Logan as well as 2018's Deadpool 2 and even the recently released The New Mutants.

The involvement of Essex Corp. has varied from film to film. It was only briefly referenced in Apocalypse, but it largely fueled the story of The New Mutants. Yet the sporadic appearances of it over the past four years made it clear that all of these films were building an overarching narrative that would eventually lead to the arrival of Mister Sinister. However, after Disney bought Fox, all plans were put on hold and it seemed like this storyline would never be properly resolved.

Mister Sinister Hellions feature

Now, though, Deadpool 3 has the opportunity to finally offer the pay off fans have been waiting for. If the threequel were to finally feature the long-awaited debut of Mister Sinister, we could learn why the villain was collecting the genetic materials of so many mutants -- and what he was planning to do with it. It's clear the villain was playing a very long and intricate game -- and, when he's finally ready to make himself known, who better to go up against him than Wade Wilson?

Mister Sinister is a colorful character with a flamboyant personality that might just remind you of a certain someone. Sure, Sinister and Deadpool are different, but they have plenty of similarities that would make for a fascinating pairing on the big screen. In fact, the two characters have been rivals before: in the 2013 Deadpool video game, Mister Sinister served as the overarching villain.

When it comes to Deadpool and Mister Sinister facing off, there is definite precedent. Having the two characters clash would be entertaining all on its own, and it would finally resolve a storyline that has been left open-ended for a very long time. Of course, it would be up to Marvel to decide how connected the film is to prior entries in Fox's X-Men franchise. But even if the studio chooses to have the film take place in the MCU, Mister Sinister would still be the right choice for the villain in the film.

Written by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, Deadpool 3 stars Ryan Reynolds. The film has yet to receive a release date.
