Deadpool 3 has an official release date and a surprising co-star joining actor Ryan Reynolds.

In a video Reynolds posted on his Twitter account, the Deadpool actor joked about the long struggle to find the right angle for the Merc with a Mouth's first film as part of the MCU. It depicts a workout montage as Reynolds recounts the hours and soul searching he'd put into making the story for the next film before quipping that he had "nothing." Then as he states they had "one idea," Hugh Jackman walks across the screen behind him. Reynolds asks him if he'd be willing to play Wolverine one more time, to which the actor replies, "Yeah, sure, Ryan." Along with the surprise reveal of Jackman's return, the video shows that Deadpool 3 comes out on Sept. 6, 2024.

Wolverine and Deadpool's History in Film

Jackman first portrayed Wolverine in 2000's X-Men and went on to appear in X2 (2003) and X-Men: Last Stand (2006). His popularity as the character led to three solo films, X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013) and Logan (2017), the latter of which is often regarded as one of the greatest superhero films of all time. Jackman also featured in the prequel trilogy with cameos in X-Men: First Class (2011) and X-Men: Apocolypse (2016), as well as a central role in the well-regarded X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). He even appeared briefly at the end of Deadpool 2 in 2018, when the titular character goes back in time to kill the wildly-lambasted version of himself that appeared in X-Men Origins, also played by Reynolds.

Reynolds' casting in the 2009 film excited fans prior to the film's release, who felt the actor was perfectly suited to the role. However, the writing on the character, especially the removal of his mouth at the end -- something Reynolds' joked about on Twitter when posting the Wolverine news -- outraged those who'd wanted to see the iconic character on screen. The character finally returned in 2016's Deadpool, which received widespread critical and fan acclaim for staying true to his violent and humorous comics.

Deadpool 3's lengthy production concerned some fans, as it's been four years since the second film with few words about the project. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick recently described making the Deadpool script as a "comfy old sweater," noting that Disney and Marvel had given them support to "maintain the tone and the vision" they have for the third film. Despite fears from many, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige confirmed the third film would maintain the series' R rating to stay true to the character.

Deadpool 3, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, hits theaters on Sept. 6, 2024.
