After learning about Morbius memes, Deadpool 3 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick feel the need to reference it in Wade Wilson's upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

In a recent tweet, The Post Credit Podcast revealed that Reese and Wernick weren't aware of the viral Morbius memes. The writers explained, "We haven't seen Morbius. We haven't even seen the memes. But now it's on our radar." In regard to working a Morbius joke into the third Deadpool film, they said, "Now we'll have to."

After Morbius failed to meet audiences' expectations, Jared Leto's Living Vampire acquired a dedicated cult following. The craze started after a dance scene from Morbius went viral, prompting denizens of the internet to mock Sony's latest superhero flick. The moment in question shows the film's antagonist Milo, played by Matt Smith, dancing in his bedroom while getting dressed. The joke spread so far that Leto himself got in on the movement, sharing a video of him reading a script for Morbius 2: It's Morbin' Time. Despite the online following, Morbius failed to deliver a warm box office reception in its second run in theaters. Doubling down on the irony, over 30,000 fans have signed a petition to have Morbius return to cinemas a third time.

Although Reese and Wernick were originally unaware of the viral Morbin' Time shenanigans, they recognize that Morbius is a reference ripe for Deadpool's picking. The Merc with a Mouth is notorious for breaking the fourth wall to poke fun at the industry and characters from other comic book universes. The first two Deadpool films provided a slew of references to Fox's other X-Men franchise films as well as the DC Extended Universe. Following Disney's acquisition of Fox, Deadpool will join the MCU which the writers say will prompt a "fish-out-of-water" storyline.

Morbius, being a Spider-Man character, also shares a link to Disney's ever-growing superhero universe. The film showed the MCU's Vulture, played by Michael Keaton, crossing over into Morbius' reality. The post-credits scene was widely mocked for its awkward dialogue, acting and it's strange undermining of the movie's continuity.

Morbius is now available in 4K, Blu-ray, DVD, and online streaming. At the time of this writing, Deadpool 3 has yet to begin production or announce a release date.
