WARNING: The following article contains mild spoilers for Deadpool 2, in theaters now.

Deadpool 2 writers are already looking into focusing on very specific parts of Cable's background, given that the comic book character enjoys a rich and extensive a backstory that spans multiple eras in X-Men history.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Rhett Reese, who co-wrote 2016's Deadpool and Deadpool 2, revealed which aspects of Cable he hopes to explore in a potential sequel.

"We certainly want to explore the virus that's killing him." Reese said, referencing the techno-organic virus that has rendered Cable's entire arm metal. "There was a little bit of that in this script and it didn't quite make it into the cut, but this idea that he is sort of slowly becoming more machine than man, I think is definitely something we want to explore."

X-Men villain Apocalypse infects Cable with the virus in the comics, intending to kill the time-traveling mutant. After having his arm consumed by the virus, as similarly seen in the film, Cable travels to the far-future to stabilize his condition.

Reese is also intrigued by the lost-in-time aspect of Cable's persona and hopes to explore that in a future film.

"We also want to explore a little bit of him being a man out of time because now he really is, the way we've set it up [in Deadpool 2], trapped, in theory, in this previous time and he's committed to trying to make the world a better place." Reese said, adding that he also wants to explore what makes the character such a good companion to Deadpool. "We definitely want to explore that too, and then I think largely we just always want to use Cable as a foil for Deadpool. He's such a man on a mission who doesn't want to be distracted by irreverence, and silliness, and craziness and that's the perfect foil for Deadpool."

With Deadpool 2 projected to earn $350 million at the global box office this weekend and finally end Avengers: Infinity War's three-week reign at the top, a sequel exploring Cable's backstory seems more than likely.
