The long-anticipated first look at Deadpool 2 has arrived! And even though the teaser only offered about seven seconds of actual footage from the sequel, Ryan Reynolds and company packed quite a bit of information about the film into the admittedly short bit of footage.
Though he was shrouded in shadow, Josh Brolin’s Cable did indeed make his presence felt in the teaser, first as a shadowy figure dropping from a building onto a car (which Wade immediately demolishes), then as the closing scene, where we see the popular mutant’s hand against a background of hi-caliber weaponry. But there’s more — at the 1:36 mark, we see Cable’s image on a banner, inside what appears to be a church dedicated to him and his apparent role in the end of the world — a church apparently burning at the hands (or mutant powers) ion Julian Dennison’s still-unnamed character. It would appear Cable’s tendency to travel through time will be a major focus of the sequel.
We also catch a quick glimpse of Zazie Beetz’s Domino, kicking down a door in what appears to be a school (one for gifted youngsters, perhaps) that’s being engulfed in flames, not unlike the church where Cable’s banner appears.
The rest of the footage is more light-hearted, though not at all short on action or its fair share of clues regarding Deadpool 2‘s cast and storylines. As expected, Dopinder is back, though he appears to have a more vital role than in the original. Karan Soni’s character became an unexpected fan-favorite in the original, and he has two scenes in the teaser which indicate his bond with Wade Wilson has grown stronger between films; not only does he get a badass moment walking alongside ‘Pool, he’s also included in a scene featuring Weasel, which leads us to believe he’s been brought fully into Deadpool’s inner circle.
The rest of Deadpool 2‘s returning cast makes their presence felt as well, with the exception of Colossus, though it’s likely the CG-created X-Man simply has yet to be fully rendered. And, of course, there’s the teaser’s near-final scene starring the Merc with a Mouth’s favorite microwavable meal: A pair of Hot Pockets. It’s good to see some things never change…
Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 sees the return of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus and Karan Soni as Dopinder, with newcomers Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable, Julian Dennison in an unknown role and Jack Kesy as a villain widely thought to be Black Tom Cassidy. The film opens June 1, 2018.
