Deadpool 2 Reshoots Injected More Cable Into the Film

Deadpool 2 star Josh Brolin sets the record straight on how much Cable was added to David Leitch's movie during those reshoots.

As David Leitch's Deadpool 2 makes it way into theaters, Josh Brolin confirms that those reshoots added plenty more Cable to the superhero sequel.

Despite rumors that the movie underperformed at test screenings, the official answer was that those who were shown early drafts of the R-rated movie wanted more of Brolin's Nathan Summers and Zazie Beetz's Domino alongside Ryan Reynolds as the Merc With a Mouth and the possible formation of the X-Force.

Speaking with Yahoo! Movies, the 50-year-old set the record straight once and for all to why he had to suit up as Summers once again after the cameras had apparently stopped rolling.

"There was so much emphasis on Cable that you forgot that it was an introductory movie for Cable," said Brolin. "We go into X-Force and Cable’s a massive presence in X-Force, he’s the leader of X-Force, and Deadpool’s a part of X-Force, so it’s a very introductory film for him."

As for how much of Cable fans can expect to see, Nathan Summers sounds like he will be a presence throughout Leitch's movie. "There was so much emphasis put on him, that when you go ‘we gotta do reshoots because test screenings loved that character’, but having done True Grit with 7 minutes of screen time, but you’re talking about him the whole time, he feels like he’s in the entire movie."

"This, you’re talking about Cable so much, you feel like he’s in more of the movie than he is," he continued. "But I think we just needed a little more, and we needed to tighten up a few things. There were a couple of fight scenes that we just made more complete."

Note Brolin's emphasis on the fight scenes, meaning that the star promises plenty of action-packed sequences where the time-traveling mercenary will get to use his monstrous metal arm. Unlike the production troubles and massive overhaul of Josh Boone's New Mutants, Deadpool 2 simply tweaked a little for a more cohesive feel and some more of the fan-favorite Cable. Considering it is the character's cinematic debut, it isn't hard to see why Leitch wanted to make his arrival as spectacular as possible.

The hero of the hour will undoubtedly still be Reynold's Deadpool, but considering that Deadpool 2 hopes to pave the way for like likes of X-Force, it makes sense that there is a shifted focus onto new arrivals like Cable and Domino.

Given that early reviews are already overwhelmingly positive towards Deadpool 2 and that the movie is on for a bumper box office opening, a few simple reshoots sound like they have improved what was already a solid entry to the darker side of the X-Men universe. Thankfully, both Brolin and critics assure fans that Wade Wilson will be sharing his screen time with the likes of Cable and co. when Deadpool 2 hits theaters.

The film hits theaters on May 18.
