The Deadpool Before Christmas, the upcoming PG-13 rerelease of Deadpool 2, may tone down the mutant merc’s mouthiness, but that doesn’t mean the movie is just for kids.

Screenwriter Paul Wernick explained as much in an interview with /Film, saying that the rerelease includes new footage and should appeal to all Deadpool fans, even ones that have already seen the original sequel.

“I think it’s not only going to appeal to kids but also to people who love Deadpool,” he said. “I think it’s subversive enough and fun and creative and something that only Deadpool could do. So I think it’s going to be a real joy for not only a whole new audience, but also an audience that has seen and loved the Deadpool movies.”

He further explained the PG-13 cut wasn’t simply old footage or outtakes: The Deadpool Before Christmas went back into production and shot two brand new scenes for the film, based off an idea by Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds.

“We definitely shot new stuff,” Wernick said. “And recently too. After Deadpool 2 came out and we were all sitting around, we came to it less about the idea of let’s make a PG-13 movie and more, ‘Let’s talk a little bit about Deadpool.’ We were kicking around some ideas and then I think it was Ryan [Reynolds] who had the great framing device and we all got excited and went to the studio. They said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it. Fire up the cameras.’ About two months ago we were out on soundstages shooting again. Ryan was in the suit and the gang was back together, Dave Leitch and Ryan and us having a great time and laughing. It comes together great so we’re super excited about it.”

Announced earlier in October, The Deadpool Before Christmas is an “adapted version” of Deadpool 2 that will be rated PG-13. Two entirely new scenes have been filmed for the rerelease, totaling 15 minutes of new footage. Those scenes are reported to be bookends to the film, parodying the storytelling framing device of The Princess Bride and featuring that film’s Fred Savage.

The Deadpool Before Christmas, starring Ryan Reynolds, Zazie Beetz, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapičić, Julian Dennison, Josh Brolin, and Fred Savage, is set for a December 21 release.
