Just when it seemed as if the mystery surrounding the identity of Julian Dennison's character in Deadpool 2 had been solved, a new teaser for the Fox sequel has reignited speculation by revealing his apparent code name.

After Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson referred to the kid as Russell in a TV promo, we deduced that he's the film's version of Russell "Rusty" Collins, a mutant with pyrokinetic abilities introduced in 1986 in Marvel Comics' X-Factor #1. Same name, same powers; it certainly seemed logical. However, a new teaser released on social media by 20th Century Fox Singapore states, "Meet Russell, aka Hot Stuff."

There's no Marvel Comics character by that name, which suggests Russell is a wholly new creation for the film, or "Hot Stuff" is a nickname bestowed upon him by Deadpool in a nod to Hot Stuff the Little Devil. You know, the mischievous, fire-producing Harvey Comics character. We're guessing it's the latter.

Russell certainly has attitude to spare, not to mention a target on his back, leaving it to Deadpool to assemble X-Force to help him protect the kid from Cable, who's determined to kill him for reasons yet unknown.

Debuting May 18, director David Leitch’s Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular Deadpool, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, Zazie Beetz as Domino, Julian Dennison as Russell and Josh Brolin as Cable.
