Rumors circulated very early on about Juggernaut making an appearance in the upcoming Deadpool 2, fed by other rumors that Black Tom Cassidy will be the film's major antagonist. After all, Marvel Comics readers know that Black Tom Cassidy was a close, personal friend to Cain Marko, and the two have committed more than few crimes together when they weren't busy fighting the X-Men.
If Black Tom Cassidy is going to feature in Deadpool 2, it made sense to expect the Juggernaut. But as more clips and more information came out, it seemed that an appearance by the massive villain was more and more unlikely. The focus seemed to be the conflict between Deadpool and Cable, with nary a glimpse of Black Tom or Juggernaut to be seen.
However, a recently released TV spot and the film's final trailer may prove those early rumors true after all. In just one shot, lasting a fraction of a second, the trailer has raised a lot of questions, especially since it adds just a little more to what was shown in the TV spot: A clip of Colossus yelling at something before leaping into combat.
Right after we're shown an angered Colossus roaring fiercely at the 1:32 spot, you'll see him throw a powerful punch at a rounded object. The target of Colossus' rage looks a lot like the bullet-shaped helmet worn by the unstoppable Juggernaut in the comics. It's certainly big enough, and if you look at it, you'll see dents and scratches, clearly from countless battles, which would make sense. What's more, it looks to be attached to a (massively thick) neck.
All the evidence indicates that this may very well be the Juggernaut. Sure, it may not be the shade of crimson comic fans are used to seeing, but remember, Juggernaut didn't wear red the last time he appeared in Fox's X-Men franchise either.
For those who can't (or don't want to) remember, Juggernaut featured in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, played by Vinnie Jones. That Juggernaut was much smaller. and his helmet didn't cover his entire head like this one appears to. If this is is the unstoppable Juggernaut, it's clear that Deadpool 2 will be introducing a new design for the character, one slightly more faithful to its comic book counterpart. Does that mean he'll be mystically powered instead of genetically gifted? We can't say.
Assuming that this is in fact, Juggernaut, we're left with a few more questions, chief among them being, how is he involved in Deadpool's story, and what happens at the end of that fight between him and Colossus?
In the original Deadpool, Colossus was shown to be all about heroic acts and honor. He sought peaceful resolutions and didn't leap headfirst into a destructive battle, so its unlikely that he will be the one to start the fight with Juggernaut. If he can help it, it's also highly unlikely that he'll end the fight by killing his opponent, even if he looked to be incredibly enraged in that short clip.
On the other hand, taking a frame-by-frame view of the sequence, we see Piotr driving what appears to be a steel arrow wrapped around his fist into what we're assuming is the Juggernaut's face. So...
If Deadpool 2 does feature a Juggernaut powered by Cyttorak, there's still a chance Colossus could defeat the Juggernaut using a non-lethal resolution, the presence of that arrow be damned. In the comics, Colossus actually became the new Juggernaut by striking a deal with Cyttorak after Cain Marko Kuurth, Breaker of Stone. As the new Juggernaut, Colossus was granted power enough to defeat Kuurth in combat.
Given the overall tone of the film, the likelihood of that happening is low, but it is a Deadpool flick, so anything can happen. As long as we get to see Colossus square off against one of the X-Men's most physically dominating villains, we'll be happy.
In theatres May 18, Deadpool 2 is directed by David Leitch and stars Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable and Jack Kesy who may be Black Tom Cassidy.
