Ryan Reynolds' Merc With a Mouth has katanas, and quips, at the ready in the latest TV spot for Deadpool 2, which places him between the time-traveling Cable and the pyrokinetic kid he seeks to kill.
The promo takes a hilarious jab at Josh Brolin's film debut in 1985's The Goonies, as Wade Wilson refers to Cable as "One-Eyed Willy." There's also a throwback to Deadpool's first appearance in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine where he dodges every bullet in a scene using just his blades. At 40, however, he's perhaps no longer in top physical shape.
In another TV spot that aired during the season finale of The Walking Dead, Wade refers to the kid as "Russell" giving us our first possible hint at Julian Dennison's (Hunt For the Wilderpeople) role: He may be Russel "Rusty" Collins, introduced in Marvel Comics' X-Factor #1, though there isn't much else besides their shared mutant ability to confirm the theory. Knowing Wade Wilson, it could also be a joke about the young character from Pixar's Up!
Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Karan Soni as Dopinder, with newcomers Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable, and Julian Dennison. Jack Kesy plays a villain widely thought to be Black Tom Cassidy. The film hits theaters on May 18.
