The Merc with a Mouth was almost the Pop Pop with a Mouth in Deadpool 2, according to star Ryan Reynolds.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reynolds revealed that an early draft for the second Deadpool film featured the titular character as a father, something that he and co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick quickly realized wasn't going to work. "The genesis of it was 'What if Deadpool had a child?'" Reynolds said. "Like, what if we started five years later and what would that be like? By page 1.5, it was totally untenable."
"We were just like, 'Nope. Nope. No, no, no. This is never, ever going to work.'" he continued. "We went back to the drawing board and kind of reworked it in a way about wanting to have a child, which is something that so many people I know experience on a daily basis -- wanting to have a child but can't."
Reynolds' comments do suggest that Wade Wilson and Morena Baccarin's Vanessa will be unable to start a family in the film. Their inability to have a child may have something to do with Deadpool's desire to protect Julian Dennison's Russell from Josh Brolin's Cable. "The first movie is a love story masquerading as a comic-book movie," Reynolds said. "And this one is kind of a family film masquerading as a comic-book film again."
In theaters May 18, director David Leitch’s Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular Deadpool, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, Zazie Beetz as Domino, Julian Dennison as Russell and Josh Brolin as Cable.
