As Deadpool 2 completes post-production, director David Leitch has jumped into the fast lane. Leitch has officially signing on to direct the currently untitled Fast & Furious spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

Leitch, who has been rumored to be in line to helm the project for months, has developed a reputation for delivering hard-hitting, high octane action. He directed last year's Atomic Blonde and co-directed the original John Wick after a prolific career working as a stunt coordinator and second unit director, including directing the second unit for Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Wolverine.

Rumored to be titled Hobbs and Shaw, after Johnson and Statham's Fast & Furious characters, the spinoff is slated to follow the duo after the former rivals joined forces and became friends in the long-running action franchise's latest installment, The Fate of the Furious.

In the wake of reports of behind-the-scenes tension between Johnson and Fast & Furious star and producer Vin Diesel, Johnson, whose latest action blockbuster Rampage opens this week, has expressed doubt whether he will return to the franchise beyond the spinoff.

"Right now I’m concentrating on making the spinoff as good as it can be." Johnson remarked when asked about his participation in a ninth film in the main series. "But I wish [Diesel] all the best, and I harbor no ill will there, just because of the clarity we have."

The as-yet untitled Fast and Furious spinoff will star Johnson and Statham and is expected to hit theaters on July 26, 2019. The script was written by Chris Morgan, who has been involved with the series since its inception, having written six of the eight installments for the Universal franchise.
