Deadpool 2 Director Explains Film’s Approach to Cable’s Origins

As if expectations weren’t already high for Deadpool 2, adding Cable and Domino has only increased the excitement, and stakes, for fans. However, Cable brings with him some baggage, in the form of an overly complicated backstory involving time travel, alternate futures and convoluted parentage, while Domino has her own difficulties when it comes to depicting her probability-altering powers onscreen.

Luckily, however, director David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde) understands those hurdles, and looks to doing both characters justice in the Fox sequel.

“Look, I think besides all of the Deadpool, sort of the film universe Deadpool, you kind of have to be selective of like how you approach these characters because there’s a canon of work that’s so massive that you could never put it all on screen,” Leitch told Screen Rant at Comic-Con International in San Diego. “So we’ve been really particular what we’re going to put in and what we’re going to leave for potential future if it goes that way and, uh, I think you’ll like it. It’s all in the spirit of canon, and also in the spirit of like what Deadpool the movie is.”

While Leitch remained understandably vague, it would make sense to have Cable’s introduction in Deadpool 2, but leave out enough backstory so future films like X-Force can better explore his history. As for Domino, Leitch was initially concerned about how to translate her powers to film, but he has since come to enjoy working with a character who can manipulate probability fields, making her absurdly lucky.

“We’re excited to play with that idea in choreography,” he said. “I’m not going to give you how it’s all going to play out. As a choreographer, having a character with her abilities is really a trick. I think at first it seems like a problem. Like oh my god, how do you demonstrate luck? And then you just see it like, oh, this is the coolest opportunity ever, so we’re really excited and we’re creating really great stuff for her character.”

Once again starring Ryan Reynolds, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand and Karan Soni, along with newcomers Zazie Beetz as Domino and Josh Brolin as Cable, Deadpool 2 is set to hit theaters on June 1, 2018.
