Fans of David Leitch's Dedpool 2 can get a look at early concept art for what Josh Brolin's Cable could have looked like.
As Nathan Summers, aka Cable, Brolin became a major part of the R-rated sequel as he traveled back in time to change a tragic future. Pulling from the Marvel comics, Leitch and the design team aimed for a comics-accurate look for Cable that clearly went through several iterations.
Makeup artist Bill Corso shared the early designs, and revealed some serious Terminator influences that focused more on Cable's cybernetics in Deadpool 2.

Here’s something Deadpool/Cable Cool! Andy Clement and his brilliant team at Creative Character Engineering spent a great deal of time and effort translating @jsmarantz awesome #cable concept art( under the direction of @davidmleitch @scheunee and @kurtandbart with my two cents and inspiration from @robliefeld )into a 3-D prop for the VFX team to use for lighting reference. This was the resulting piece, but sadly didn’t seem to meet with the VFX team’s approval 🤔 Of course designs continue to evolve through shooting and well into Post Production but I for one thought this was really neat. To the best of my knowledge it wasn’t used. As you can see it shows off our idea of the skin being more diseased looking where the two elements meet and we even thought it would be cool to incorporate some inner lighting for effect. Ultimately the red was deemed too Terminator looking so we suggested a cool, icy blue but that too was disregarded. 🤔Oh well, some ideas fly, some don’t. I’ve posted the final look at the end. What are your thoughts? And don’t be shy giving props to Andy and @cce_inc if you like- I did. #deadpool #deadpool2 #marvel #superhero #joshbrolin #prosthetics #vfx #props #art #paint #design #sculpt #print #3d #cool #mech #virus #soldier #of #the #future #teamwork @studio_aki @pepemua_fx
Corso explained how the design was a group effort, with work from concept artist Jerad S.Marantz, costume designers Kurt and Bart, production designer David Scheunemann and Leitch himself. He also reiterated that Cable was always supposed to homage Liefeld's original look.
Corso also noted the Terminator comparison, and said they nearly opted for a "cool blue" that might've had more of a Mr. Freeze vibe. While the diseased look for Cable's skin is definitely cool, the finished product showcased a subdued version of his cybernetic enhancements and techo-organic affliction.
Corso recently debuted Deadpool 2's axed villain Omega Red, so who knows if he has any more behind-the-scenes snippets for fans to look at. With Brolin set to return for Drew Goddard's X-Force, the stoic Summers could be heading for a whole new look as he once again teams up with the likes of Deadpool and Domino.
Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 stars Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus, and Karan Soni as Dopinder, with newcomers Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable, and Julian Dennison as Russell.
