If the casting of Zazie Beetz as Domino wasn't already clear indication, the writers of "Deadpool 2" say fans should expect an announcement about Cable "very soon."

"We're gonna go into production in the next couple of months," co-writer Paul Wernick told ComicBook.com, "and cast announcements will be coming fast and furious." Collaborator Rhett Reese characterized the rundown of contenders for the role as "a short, short list."

When it's made, the announcement will bring to an end more than a year of rumors and speculation that began more than a year ago, with the post-credits scene of "Deadpool." In that time, numerous actors have been linked to the role, with everyone from Dolph Lundgren to Ron Perlman to Stephen Lang lobbying to play the time-traveling mutant. Although “Friday Night Lights” star Kyle Chandler was once said to be under consideration, former director Tim Miller insists that was never the case.

More recently, speculation turned to Oscar winner Russell Crowe, and then to "Stranger Things" star David Harbour. "Man of Steel" co-star Michael Shannon was reportedly in consideration at one point, but that's no longer the case.

Adding to previous comments about what producers are looking for in a Cable candidate, Reese said the role requires someone who's physically imposing, but "who also has a spark of a sense of humor." And then there's also Fox's planned "X-Force" franchise to consider, as the actor will headline those films.

"Cable is head of the X-Force, so it's someone who can also command a movie franchise," Wernick said. "It's a tall task, and we have been on the hunt for a very long time. I think once it's announced, as we get closer, people are gonna go crazy for it."

That actor will join a "Deadpool 2" cast that already includes Ryan Reynolds as the Merc With a Mouth, Zazie Beetz as Domino, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Karan Soni as Dopinder and, presumably, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus. Directed by David Leitch ("John Wick"), the film is targeted for release in 2018.
