The biggest choice for Dungeons & Dragons players is typically which race to pick and then which class to go with. However, the myriad of options do not end there as players are assaulted with conundrums on top of conundrums when it comes to picking their classes' subclasses to make a unique yet functioning character.

This can get rather intimidating for beginners so their best bet is picking the most tried and tested ones, namely the most popular subclasses associated with each class. Players usually can't go wrong with the most prominent options available and beginners would do well to stick with these subclasses before moving on to paths less taken.

12 FIGHTER - CHAMPION

Fighter, without a doubt, is the most popular class in Dungeons and Dragons right now. It's straightforward and easy to play - especially if paired with a human race. As for the subclass, the Champion is the go-to.

It's the perfect subclass for a fighter that wants to play to their strengths and just keep upping their damage potential as well as their toughness in battles. That's why it's a solid choice for beginners and veterans alike.

11 BARBARIAN - PATH OF THE TOTEM WARRIOR

Speaking of damage potential, the Barbarian class directly competes with the Fighter. Meanwhile, the most selected Barbarian subclass would be the Path of the Totem Warrior.

Think Conan the Barbarian except he's more attuned with his ancestors and also, his ancestors are wild beasts. Calling upon the spirits of said ancestors to aid them in battle is the signature style of the Totem Warrior Barbarian; it's a good reason to have a primal character.

10 PALADIN - OATH OF VENGEANCE

Paladins come in at third when it comes to the most damaging melee classes but with the right subclass, they can outshine Barbarians and Fighters. That subclass would be the Oath of Vengeance.

That's because Vengeance Paladins are basically the Batman equivalent of D&D. It's also the best strength-type class for taking down bosses due to its sky-high damage output and advantage stacking. Besides, roleplaying as an edgy scowl-faced knight is always fun.

9 ROGUE - ASSASSIN

The Rogue is another class that's a joy to roleplay due to the stereotypes and the usual subclass for it, the Assassin. It's easy to guess what it does and how much damage it can dish out.

If players love to get the jump on enemies and take them out before they even get a turn, then the Assassin Rogue will deliver. Other times, being the sneaky and stabby Swiss Army Knife of the party is satisfying.

8 RANGER - HUNTER

For those who love Pokemon and having their favorite pet or animal join them in battle, being a Ranger, specifically with the Hunter subclass is pure thematic bliss.

The Hunter is the most accurate archetype for the Ranger. It prioritizes fighting monsters larger than it is and has a plethora of tactical options favoring ranged combat.

7 WARLOCK - THE HEXBLADE

Warlock is by far the most interesting spellcaster class right now and surprisingly, its most popular subclass is the Hexblade. It's ironic since that turns the Warlock into a melee spellcasting combatant most of the time.

The Hexblade Warlock is all about making a pact with a strange cursed sentient weapon whom their souls may or may not belong to. That weapon also communicates with them and sometimes urges them to feed it with blood... or maybe these Hexblade Warlocks have just gone insane, who knows?

6 DRUID - CIRCLE OF THE MOON

For those loner hermits out there who love to hug trees (or smooch them, whichever), the Druid who has taken up the Circle of the Moon path is the right choice. It's also the most frequent choice.

Moon Druids are fierce defenders of the wild, the kind to shapeshift into a huge beast to prove that point. Think Princess Mononoke or any pop culture character that hates civilizations or urbanity. These guys are down-to-Earth alright.

5 CLERIC - LIFE DOMAIN

Any party isn't complete without the quintessential healer of D&D or any most fantasy universes, the Cleric. Although, one has to pick the Life Domain, the most popular subclass, in order to focus on healing.

As expected, Life Clerics focus on preserving life - their teammates' lives instead of taking away the enemies' lives though they're still capable of that. As customary in D&D, Clerics are usually the ones to die last as the whole party tends to become its bodyguard unit.

4 WIZARD - SCHOOL OF EVOCATION

No Wizard should ever study their youth away in magic colleges just to be subtle with their spells. That's why one of the most popular and the aptest subclass for them is School of Evocation.

Evocation Wizards live and breath spells. They love their spells so much, they amplify them; sometimes they don't care even when allies get hit by that giant fireball along with the enemies. After all, they spent years perfecting that fireball.

3 SORCERER - DRACONIC BLOODLINE

Sorcerers, unlike Wizards, have magic handed to them on a silver platter. What better content for that silver platter than to have dragon ancestry? It seems most Sorcerers want to be part-dragon with the Draconic Bloodline.

Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers are all about emulating their ill-tempered ancestors; they get dragon wings at a certain level and also have dragon scales all over their skin - a dermatologist's nightmare. Apart from this, their ability to add a dragon-type element to their attacks is what makes this subclass awesome.

2 MONK - WAY OF THE OPEN HAND

The Way of the Open Hand subclass is a stereotypical painting of the Monk in D&D. Think of it as a meditative and calm Shaolin monk who also knows Kung Fu and prefers knuckles over pointy objects.

Open Hand Monks can channel their Ki or energy in order to heal themselves, deal more damage, or perform stunning acrobatic and athletic feats. This one's best reserved for Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee fans.

1 BARD - COLLEGE OF LORE

Wielding musical instruments as weapons and casting spells with their lyrics, that's what Bards do most of the time apart from seducing dragons. Bards from the College of Lore in particular, like knowledge and stories more than anything.

Lore Bards have an advantage when it comes to spells compared to other bards. While other Bards cavorted and slept around, Lore Bards buried themselves in books and traveled the world for tales of adventures. Every party needs one of them, that's for sure.
