The hit animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender is the story of avatar Aang, the last airbender monk whose duty is to restore peace and balance to the world during a 100-year war with the Fire Nation. He's not alone; Katara and Sokka of the Water Tribe are fearless fighters by his side, and soon, the earthbending master Toph Beifong joins him, too.

Even the prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko, turns on the bloodthirsty Fire Lord and helps avatar Aang bring peace to the world. And the story continues well into the Dark Horse comics, too. What kind of people are Aang, Katara, Zuko, and the others, though? How can we measure their character? Let's use the Dungeons & Dragons moral alignment chart to find out!

10 Avatar Aang: Lawful Good

There was never any doubt about this, was there? Aang is a model monk of the old Air Nation, a boy dedicated to spiritual enlightenment, peace, and harmony above all else. He's a skilled bender, for sure, but he wouldn't harm a fly with it. He protects the peace.

This makes Aang a natural fit for the role of avatar, a leader who would much rather talk things out to foster understanding and cooperation between all peoples. Now, he will fight, but never will he take a life.

9 Katara: Neutral Good

katara happy

She is the last living bender in the Southern Water Tribe, and she is fiercely protective of her people, and now she will leap right into action to defend Aang, too. Katara has a heart of gold and always looks out for others, even strangers whom she's never met. Remember that Painted Lady sequence?

Katara has a sense of honor and discipline, but not to the same extent as the airbenders. Neither is she reckless or aggressive, so we rank her neutral in the "Good" axis. She does what must be done, however she can.

8 Sokka: Lawful Neutral

Sokka is the oldest man in the Southern Water Tribe when his and Katara's father ships out to war, and he takes this duty very seriously. He's a cautious boy who likes to think first and keep his nose out of trouble, and his clever mind can find solutions where no one else can.

He's not an idealistic fighter like Katara or Aang, and he's skeptical of concepts like "fate" and "spirits" and higher causes in general. He fights mainly to protect his tribe and family, though he's more than ready to risk his life to fight the Fire Nation.

7 Toph Beifong: Chaotic Good

Now we get a character who will do the right thing, but you never know how she'll do it! Toph grew up in a wealthy but suffocating household, the Beifongs, and she longs to create her own future and see the whole wide world.

She tricked her parents to run off with Aang, and before then, she would frequent an earthbending fighter arena to have fun (she hardly needed the prize money). On the road, Toph is pretty stubborn and self-oriented at times, but if the group is in trouble, she's a total team player.

6 Prince Zuko: Chaotic Good

Prince Zuko is difficult to categorize, and his D&D alignment seems to change more than once. At first, he seems to be neutral evil, trying to capture the avatar and thus rob the world of its last hope. He was pretty selfish.

But that certainly changed, and Zuko's fascinating arc involved some serious self-reflection and making some hard decisions. Ultimately, he was always a good kid deep down, and he was misguided by his desire to please his father. Now, he will fight for justice and honor (real honor), and he'll do anything to get the job done.

5 Admiral Zhao: Lawful Evil

Zhao smile in Avatar

Aside from prince Zuko, Admiral Zhao was the main villain of season 1, and this lofty Fire Nation commander is a prime example of how the Fire Nation army has come this far. He's calculating, ruthless, and proud, everything that Aang is not.

Zhao is power-hungry and self-serving, and unlike Zuko, he never gave up his ambition to capture avatar Aang and make his mark on history. In fact, he was willing to kill the very moon! It was at that moment when Iroh turned on this bloodthirsty madman, and we don't blame him.

4 Iroh: Neutral Good

Uncle Iroh in Avatar

Form the very start, Iroh was a total foil to Zuko's hot-headed, impatient ways. Iroh is the disgraced brother of Fire Lord Ozai, and unlike his brother or nephew, Iroh is a man of compassion, patience, and wisdom. He would make a pretty good avatar, himself.

Iroh follows a code of conduct, but he's not totally rigid about it; he's not above trickery or schemes to escape a bad situation or defeat his enemies. But he is neither reckless or hasty, so we rank him neutral good.

3 Princess Azula: Lawful Evil

Azula on Avatar: The Last Airbender

So far, it seems like everyone is either totally good or totally bad, and this is what makes The Last Airbender a little different than the morally gray The Legend of Korra. Around here, with the exception of Zuko, the bad guys are bad, period.

Princess Azula soon takes over the role that Admiral Zhao played, and in seasons 2 and 3, she was a terrifying menace. This firebender prodigy is even more calculating and clever than Zhao was, and she pushed Aang to the very limit and was often one step ahead. Even Zuko and Iroh feared her.

2 King Kuei: Lawful Neutral

Earth King Kuei was an unwitting victim of the Dai Li plot to control Ba Sing Se and cut off all contact with the outside world. Long Feng was the real ruler around here, and King Kuei wasn't even aware of the war with the Fire Nation at all.

As a king, Kuei has his heart in the right place, but he's hardly an idealistic crusader. Rather, he thanked team avatar for freeing him of Long Feng's plot, and he dutifully mobilized his army to fight the Fire Nation properly.

1 Fire Lord Ozai: Lawful Evil

Ozai serious expression Avatar

Here's another Fire Nation leader who lives up to the reputation that all firebenders have. Just like his subordinates and generals, the Fire Lord is a ruthless and ambitious man, who burns to conquer the entire globe and become what he calls the Phoenix King.

Ozai is methodical and strategic, being a proper military commander who considers all the angles first. This means he gets along quite well with his daughter Azula, who often thinks along similar lines. Together, they are indeed a menace to the whole world.
