Nickelodeon's The Legend of Korra continues the tale begun in Avatar: The Last Airbender, and seven decades have passed. Now, viewers meet colorful new characters like the fiery Avatar Korra, the street-smart brothers Mako and Bolin, the kind and brilliant Asami Sato, and many more.

This is a diverse cast in every sense of the world, and there's all kinds of ways to measure what a person is like. Why not try the moral alignment chart found in Dungeons & Dragons? This is a 3x3 chart, with one axis for "lawful, neutral, chaotic" and another for "good, neutral, evil" making nine combinations. Many of the characters we meet in The Legend of Korra fit pretty neatly in these alignments. Let's see the results.

9 Lawful good: Tenzin

He's the son of Avatar Aang, and the world's leading air bender master and the bearer of the entire Air Nation way of life. Yes, Tenzin has a surprisingly short temper and gets into yelling matches. But for the most part, he's a real air bender monk, mastering meditation, detachment, foresight, and peace. His deep knowledge of Air Nomad lore and bending arts, love of routine and discipline, and his fiercely protective ways of his family, make him lawful good for sure. He will easily risk life and limb to defend his children, wife, and air bender students from the likes of the Red Lotus.

8 Neutral good: Bolin

Bolin making a funny face

A neutral good character like Bolin is a good guy who fights for justice, honor, and defending the innocent. They are not particularly wild and chaotic about it, but neither do they adhere to strict rules or a larger cause. They perform acts of good as they see fit, and Bolin had his wild times fighting the Equalists but also joined Kuvira's Earth Empire military as a bender soldier. He strikes even, overall, and that makes him a solid neutral good.

7 Chaotic good: Avatar Korra

And now for the heroine herself, Korra! She's a wild one, especially earlier in the series as she finally explores the world after being cooped up at the Southern Water Tribe. Korra went on a rampage in Republic City, fighting gangsters on a whim and tangling with the metal bender police. Lin can't stand her chaotic ways, but the two of them manage to get along civilly. Korra is quick to act and quick to fight, and she often invents her battle plans on the fly. Later on, though, she drifts closer to neutral good, learning to negotiate and find peace first and create practical plans before diving into a situation (such as when the Red Lotus took all the air benders captive).

6 Lawful neutral: Lin Beifong

As the daughter of the famed Toph Beifong and the current chief of Republic City's metal bender police, Lin Beifong has a lot on her plate. She's a tough, no-nonsense officer, and she strictly upholds the law and has little patience for the likes of Avatar Korra! Lin fights with the good guys, but mostly in the interest of protecting Republic City, rather than trying to save the world or uphold some heroic code of honor. Lin protects the people not out of sentimentality, but because it's why she deserves to wear the uniform.

5 True neutral: Eska

It may be tempting to say that princess Eska is evil, but perhaps she's simply not used to life outside the Northern Water Tribe throne room and she got carried away with her relationship with Bolin. Eska acts in self-interest, and though she can be vicious, she does not scheme for world domination. She and her brother, prince Desna, obeyed Unalaq out of family loyalty, and quickly backed out when the extent of Unalaq's insanity became clear. She helped set things right, and by season 3, she is a more ordinary princess of the Water Tribe. No heroics or evil plots for her. Just her duty.

4 Chaotic neutral: Varrick

Like Eska, he drifted close to evil more than once, but he strikes even in the long run. He is loyal to none but himself and Zhu Lee, and this brilliant inventor forges alliances strictly for the sake of opportunity. Joining the Earth Empire was a fine chance to invent some more goodies with Kuvira's resources, and he bailed out when things turned against him. He later helped defend Republic City, mostly to repay the good guys. Other than that, he'd much rather stay in the lab and cook up new machines than save the day. As for his role in the Water Tribe civil war... it was all business.

3 Lawful evil: Kuvira

The engineer of the Earth Kingdom certainly didn't seem evil at first, but as opposition to her movement grew, so did her iron grip on the world! Kuvira quickly got carried away and became a brutal dictator, cornering cities like Zaofu and Republic City to coerce them by gunpoint to join her empire or die. She threatened the sovereignty of Republic City, which was meant as a multi-national city, and forged terrifying weapons of destruction. Rather than try and heal the world with spirit powers, she harvested the vines and created deadly laser cannons of a sort. The world is destructive enough already, Kuvira! We don't need your Death Star!

2 Neutral evil: Unalaq

The chief of the Northern Water Tribe, Unalaq has grand visions for the world: unite the spirits and people again after far too long of living apart. His goals seemed noble, but like Kuvira, he became twisted and went on a rampage to achieve his ends. Unalaq was not a thug or a meticulous schemer in particular, though; he harnessed whatever spirit powers were needed for the job, and waited until Harmonic Convergence to launch his plan. It could be said, though, that once he fused with Vaatu, he became chaotic evil. But there is another The Legend of Korra character who is chaotic evil through and through.

1 Chaotic evil: Zaheer

A major figure in the Red Lotus, Zaheer is a dedicated anarchist and later, an air bender, too. Now, anarchists aren't always scheming to blow things up; anarchism can exist purely as philosophy, but Zaheer takes it many steps further. He chafes against the idea of kings and queens, national borders, and law. To him, humanity can only breathe free when governments and kingdoms are dissolved, to return the world to nature. To this end, he infiltrated Zaofu and tried to kidnap Korra, murdered the Earth Queen, disposed of Aiwei in the spirit world (as punishment for failure), and unleashed total chaos in Ba Sing Se! If that weren't enough, he took the air benders hostage, tricked Korra with decoys, and tried to kill her to end the Avatar cycle forever!
