James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, confirmed fans don't need to play every video game to keep up with the upcoming slate of DC Universe movies.According to Reddit, a fan on Twitter asked Gunn if fans who don't play video games will be able to follow the storyline of the new DC Universe through just the movies and TV shows. Gunn responded with a simple "yes." In a previous tweet, a fan questioned Gunn if he and DC Studios were overambitious with their plan to connect everything – movies, shows, and video games – to a new singular universe, a la the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "Do you realize top-tier AAA games take six years of development," the fan wrote. "And films take how long? How are you going to join them up in the same universe?" Gunn's answer: "First of all, that's an overstatement of time - it's closer to four years if you've got everything lined up. Secondly, we're planned out beyond that far already, so we're good!"Related: The New DCU Is Using Curiosity to Its Advantage - And It's Already Paying Off

On Jan. 31, 2023, Gunn announced his and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran's vision for the new DC Universe. The first chapter of the new DC Universe, called "Gods and Monsters," includes new TV shows like the Creature Commandos cartoon and Lanterns, along with new feature films like Superman: Legacy and Swamp Thing. Gunn clarified that films like The Batman: Part II and Joker: Folie à Deux would continue as separate projects under the DC Elseworlds banner. Additionally, Gunn assured fans that he wouldn't solely dictate the new DC Universe.

Senior Naughty Dog character artist Del Walker criticized Gunn for planning to use the new DC Universe actors to play their respective roles in future video games. "You've lost your mind if you think Hollywood can outdo Tara Strong's Harley or any VA actor," Walker wrote. "These writers and voice actors do 100 versions of everything. They are in the booth doing 600 lines of dialogue just to end up with 20 of the best in the game. You think you're going to get Robert Pattinson to outwork a VA actor? And for a budget that makes sense?"
