Early in the first trailer for DC Universe and The CW's Stargirl, we see the Justice Society headquarters engulfed in flames. While it’s alarming to suddenly find a large mansion on fire, there’s something intriguing about them: the flames are green.

This points to DC TV finally giving us a Green Lantern… just not the one that anyone was expecting. Hal Jordan and John Stewart have been the most talked-about ones, usually in conjunction with Arrow's John Diggle, but the fact we're dealing with the Justice Society in the newest DC television adaptation points to this possible appearance being actually being the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, who exists in a strange corner of an already strange set of characters.

Since Alan Scott’s origin goes back before the change at DC Comics to make Green Lanterns more like space cops, there’s been a lot of work to retcon him into the universe. He was more of a magic hero, drawing his power not from the Guardians of the Universe, but from a magical force on Earth-2 called Starheart, sometimes also known as the Green Flame of Life.

Given that the Stargirl trailer points to the destruction of the Justice Society of America (presumably not the version from Legends of Tomorrow), we can get a sense of how it might have happened. We may not get much of a look at Alan Scott since it appears the green flames from his lantern are at least partly responsible for destroying the JSA. Even if this implies we won’t see him much, this will be the first time that DC TV has shown any Green Lantern explicitly.

But it wouldn’t be the first time a DC TV series has referenced Green Lantern. The Arrowverse has been teasing the character for years. While there was fan speculation that Oliver learned to fly a plane from Hal Jordan, it was eventually revealed that he learned from his father instead. The Season 4 premiere of Arrow did include a shot of a man in a military-looking jacket with the name “Jordan” on it, but we never saw his face and he was never mentioned again.

The real teases, however, started later in the series. In the Elseworlds crossover, Earth-90 Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) recognizes John Diggle (David Ramsey), calling him John but mentioning that he was missing his ring. On Earth-90, apparently, John Diggle is instead John Stewart, one of Earth’s Green Lanterns. This is further confirmed in Season 7, Episode 19 “Spartan,” where we meet Diggle’s stepfather, Roy Stewart (Ernie Hudson). Roy Stewart is the grandfather of the comics' John Stewart, but on Earth-90, John Diggle took his stepfather’s last name and became that Earth’s Green Lantern.

This all gets just a little more confusing because we don’t quite know how all of this ties together yet. Will Stargirl be a part of the Arrowverse, making Alan Scott the first Green Lantern we see as a part of it? Stargirl is supposed to be a show for DC Universe, but will also be airing episodes on the CW. We’ve already seen those lines blurring, with Hawk and Robin from Titans appearing in "Crisis on Infinite Earths." Then there’s the HBO Max Green Lantern series, which is produced by Arrowverse Executive Producer Greg Berlanti but hasn’t yet released a lot of details.

Regardless of how it all shakes out, it looks like Stargirl could be the first DC TV show to give us a live-action Green Lantern on the small screen, at long last. That it’s likely to be Alan Scott who gets there first is a real surprise, since he’s not the first choice most fans would have had. Sometimes, though, it just makes sense to start with the original.
