Saddest movie news of the day? That's probably /Film's discovery that the rumors that DC Entertainment was developing a movie based on James Robinson's Starman were apparently unfounded.

Admittedly, the rumor had little meat to it beyond the mention of a movie being developed by Sherlock Holmes producer Dan Lin and DC Entertainment's Gregory Noveck, but that was all that was needed for fans of the series to get excited. It's easy to understand why; a faithful Starman movie series would allow an actor to play a more nuanced superhero who goes from finding the job ridiculous to believing in it (and himself), with stories that grow in scope and scale as he does so, including a trip to space for a special effects-laden installment. Equally complex would be the role of the Shade, a seemingly-immortal, morally-grey friend who's also a supervillain who may or may not have reformed - and production designers would love the challenge of creating Opal City, the setting which is almost a character within the story. The rumor - now, sadly, discredited by /Film's source - is one of those occasions when you hear about a plan and it sounds exactly right; here's hoping that DC Entertainment COO Geoff Johns sees the buzz and tries to make it into a reality after all. Cinema would probably thank him.
