When a Warner Bros. feature film starring famous DC Comics superhero "The Flash" was announced last October, fans were a bit surprised -- after all, The CW's "The Flash" TV show debuted that same month as an instant ratings success. Subsequent speculation centered around the possibility that the big-screen Flash may not be Barry Allen, the version portrayed on television by Grant Gustin, but perhaps Wally West or another character who's filled the role in the comics. Yet based on recent comments from Phil Lord, who's developing the film with his collaborator Chris Miller, it looks like two live-action Barry Allens is indeed the plan.

"It's interesting, because there's a really popular TV show out there, and we're trying to carve out space for the movie that's apart from that," Lord said on The Hippojuice Podcast (via SlashFIlm). "I believe it's going to be Barry Allen... It's going to be it's own -- we're more trying to stick with the cinematic universe... it really is its own thing, and kind of a standalone movie. We're just trying to think of the best story. I think you guys will like it, it's kind of a different take on superhero stuff."

Additionally, Lord and Miller are working on an animated "Spider-Man" film for Sony, announced last month.

"We're sort of juggling superheroes with the color red in them, that's all we do," Lord said. "We're trying not to confuse their powers or anything, but it does get tricky. But it's the same thing, is there a way to do one of these movies in a new way? That's the exciting thing about it being animated, is it opens up a lot of different possibilities."

Lord and Miller will write the treatment and produce the "Spider-Man" animated film, and are developing "The Flash" but have not yet been announced to direct. The "Spider-Man" animated film has a release date of July 20, 2018; "The Flash" movie is expected for 2018.
