DC's CMX Line to Publish "Densha Otoko" and "Penguin Revolution"

Official Press Release

CMX, the manga imprint of DC Comics, announces the addition of DENSHA OTOKO to the company's growing stable of manga titles. The first 182-page volume is scheduled for October release from writer Hitori Nakano and artist Wataru Watanabe (Seifuku Nuidara).

Based on the supposed true story, DENSHA OTOKO set off a cultural phenomenon in Japan. It tells the heartwarming tale of an "otaku" (meaning a geek or nerd) transforming into a self-confident young man in order to be able to date and start a relationship with an actual, real-life woman. The communications between "Densha" and his network of cyber space advisors and friends was compiled into book form and became hugely popular, spawning manga adaptations, a television series and a film. Series writer "Hitori Nakano" is in fact a representation of each one of the people who made the story possible.

The version published by CMX and featuring the art of Wataru Watanabe was first serialized in Akita Shoten's Champion Red magazine in 2005 and lauded by critics as the strongest and definitive version of the modern romance. Specifically, the book is credited as the most humorous and affectionate version of the series in print.

Young "Densha" has never had a girlfriend, or even come close. However, things change for the protagonist when he unexpectedly saves a lovely girl from an attempted assault by a drunken man on a train. (Densha Otoko literally translates as "Train Man.") A few days later, "Densha" receives a pair of expensive teacups from the girl as a thank-you gift, and soon after, he finds himself promising to take the girl he calls "Hermess"(named after the cups) out for dinner! But where can an inexperienced romantic turn to for advice and guidance? A chat room, of course. But will the well-intended though sometimes conflicting advice that "Densha" receives from his cyber-friends turn this awkward nebbish into a poised young man or just confuse his efforts?

Smoothly mixing sharp humor, modern romance and the youthful angst that comes with growing up, Hitori Nakano and Wataru Watanabe create a definitive and refreshing take on modern love, fully immersed in the hi-tech world of today, making Densha Otoko a pleasurable romp for any reader.
