In 2014, Warner Bros. announced an ambitious film slate for the DC Extended Universe, featuring some of the comics publisher's best-known heroes, including Wonder Woman, Shazam, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash. However, the critical and commercial failure of 2017's Justice League resulted in some pretty major restructuring for the DCEU. As a result, Barry Allen has not yet received his own solo film. However, that's about to change next year with the release of director Andy Muschietti's The Flash, in which Ezra Miller reprises his role as Barry Allen from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

What Is the Story Going into the DCEU Flash Film?

While actor Ezra Miller's Flash had cameos in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, both of which released in 2016, Justice League was the Scarlet Speedster's first major appearance in the DCEU. In Justice League, the hero worked alongside Bruce Wayne/Batman, Vic Stone/Cyborg, Arthur Curry/Aquaman and Diana Prince/Wonder Woman to resurrect Clark Kent/Superman so as to defeat Steppenwolf -- a minion of the New God Darkseid. The DCEU's Flash most recently appeared during The CW's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover, where he briefly interacted with his Arrowverse counterpart.

The actual plot of The Flash film has been in flux for quite some time. However, Warner Bros. revealed the movie's title and original logo as Flashpoint at 2017's Comic-Con International in San Diego and that seems to be the general direction the DCEU movie is headed, albeit with some potential differences. At the DC FanDome event, producer Barbara Muschietti teased that The Flash movie will both restart the DCEU and remember everything that came before it. She also hinted the film will include several DC characters.

Written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Andy Kubert, Flashpoint comes about as a result of Barry traveling back in time to save his mother from dying at the hands of Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash. When Barry wakes up in the Flashpoint reality, his mother is alive, his father is dead and he himself has no powers. In this alternate world, Barry was never the Flash. However, with a war between Aquaman's Atlantis and Wonder Woman's Themyscira threatening to destroy the planet, Barry teams up with Thomas Wayne -- who became Batman when his reality's Bruce was murdered -- and Cyborg to stop the threat.

The movie's director Andy Muschietti has confirmed at least the multiverse element, saying the movie presents a story that implies a unified universe. "All the cinematic iterations that we've seen before are valid," Muschietti said. "It's inclusive in the sense that it is saying all that you've seen exists, and everything that you will see exists, in the same unified multiverse." Michael Keaton is set to reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman, playing the same version of the hero that he did in the 1989 movie, which further confirms the multiverse will play a role, thus bringing the upcoming film closer to the source material.

There is no official trailer for The Flash at this time. However, DC FanDome revealed concept art for the Flash's new costume.

Who Is in The Flash Movie?

In addition to Miller, Kiersey Clemons will return as Iris West after her part was cut from the theatrical version of Justice League. Ray Fisher, for his part, seems unlikely to return as Cyborg, while Ron Livingston has replaced Billy Crudup as Henry Allen.

The Flash will feature at least two Batmen, as in addition to Keaton, Ben Affleck will return as Bruce Wayne/Batman after having walked away from the role following Justice League. Affleck was open to reprising the role, and after reading the movie's script and passing along notes that were addressed, he signed onto the project. Muschietti has also noted that Keaton's Batman has a "substantial" role in the movie.

In addition to those roles, Sasha Calle will play the powerful Kryptonian Supergirl in The Flash, while Maribel Verdú will play Nora Allen, Barry's mother. Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Rudy Mancuso will also appear in the film, though their roles are not known at this time.

The Flash has had a number of different creative teams attached to it over the years, with a number of notable directors and writers departing the project. However, the project has finally landed on It and It: Chapter 2 director Andy Muschietti, who will work from a script by Bumblebee and Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson.
