This article contains spoilers for DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #2, on sale now from DC.

One of the most interesting comparisons regarding DCeased was, unsurprisingly, to Marvel Zombies. Both rival publishers have copied each other's big events at times, but fans didn't mind this spin because zombie apocalypses are a popular concept.

However, DCeased was a bit different because it turned living folks into the Blighted Ones thanks to the Anti-Life Virus, rather than use them as an undead army rising up from graves. Interestingly, War of the Undead Gods, also had a cure to bring these beings back to the light. But as of War of the Undead Gods #2 (by Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Andy Lanning, Rain Beredo, and Saida Temofonte), it's clear the DC zombie landscape isn't a remix of Marvel Zombies anymore -- it's actually reworking Ultimatum.

What Was Marvel's Ultimatum?

Dceased has Darkseid killing Sinestro and becoming a Yellow Lantern

Now, Marvel's Ultimatum ravaged the Ultimate Universe, but it wasn't received well. It was seen as a gimmick to end that reality, with Magneto going on a rampage to kill as many people as possible after Scarlet Witch's mistreatment. He snapped Professor Xavier's neck, flooded the planet by reversing the magnetic poles, and even killed Wolverine. A lot of fans, though, felt the constant deaths lacked nuance, and were all style, no substance.

It was evident in Blob eating Wasp, Hank Pym eating Blob, and Cyclops eventually blowing Magneto's head off. The event quickly became a pedestal for shock factor, further backed by the Thing smashing Dr. Doom's head and Dormammu strangling Dr. Strange. Thankfully, the likes of Nick Fury and Miles Morales were so well done, they did help deal with the aftertaste of Ultimatum, which never really felt like it had respect for the characters, both good and bad, in that realm.

DCeased is Following in Ultimatum's Footsteps

Dceased has Warworld frying Arkillo

War of the Undead Gods #2 did feel like it had that similar spiritual energy, bucking what was done previously where DCeased took time to kill off characters, making the deaths resonate as readers got to know these victims prior. Here, it does feel like the story's just careening forth, evidenced by two scary deaths. The first one came when Supergirl battered the Green Lanterns, took over Warworld, and then used the laser to blow Arkillo apart. It stunned Sinestro as he didn't expect to lose his Yellow Lantern general like this. Right after, Darkseid would show Soranik how powerful he could be, not by using the corrupt tech in his possession, but by ripping Sinestro's head off.

After killing her dad, he then became a Yellow Lantern, ready to spread his poisoned movement. The thing is, it'd have been nice to know more about Sinestro's Corps, have them forming an alliance with other heroic Corps, or even with the Earth-based heroes who were now partnering with Brainiac. The Injustice books (also helmed by Tom Taylor) did just that, subverting DC lore, but with purpose and meaning as heroes and villains united against Superman's tyrannical regime.

But now, DCeased has shifted from its prime essence of zombies devouring others and the undead being a rabid force, into Darkseid teleporting around to cause Ultimatum-like chaos and deaths by other means. The way he also destroyed Korugar nodded to Magneto destroying Latveria and New York, and while it's not bad to see his Blighted Ones as this destructive tidal wave, it's best to make it a slow burn faithful to the nature of the zombies. But at the moment it seems DCeased is mimicking what Ultimatum did just for the sake of jaw-dropping moments.
