The following article contains spoilers from DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #2, on sale now.

The story of the DC Universe's war against the forces of anti-life has rarely been a happy one. Between losses that were ultimately avoidable and lingering guilt over traumatic events, this alternate world relishes in causing its characters emotional anguish. DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #2 (by Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Andy Lanning, Rain Beredo, Saida Temofonte) continues this trend by not only executing Sinestro in front of his daughter but then forcing her to watch as his ring then selecting his murderer as its next wielder.

As stated above, this isn't the first time the heroes have suffered tragic losses, and odds are strong that this won't be the last. They've already lost an unknown ally and family member in Supergirl, and with Mister Miracle and Big Barda's son in the aether, it's anyone's guess when the tragedies will stop.

Darkseid Kills Sinestro

In a story where the dead are needed to be a threat, it was always a guarantee that there would be losses. It is impossible at this point to keep track of how many have been lost to the violence, but the emotional toll is obvious. In the very first issue of the concluding series, Alfred learned about the cure for anti-life, meaning he killed three of his sons for no reason. It wasn't his fault, but the emotional trauma of that knowledge will undoubtedly haunt him for the rest of his life. Likewise, Soranik had to watch as her father was murdered in front of her by Darkseid, only for his ring to then choose Darkseid, as if rewarding him for the murder.

This is cruel to Soranik for a number of reasons. Aside from the complicated nature of her relationship with Sinestro, she still loved him, but now would never have the chance to try and reconcile their differences. His ring going to Darkseid is just rubbing salt in that wound. She is far from the only one to suffer in this war though. Damian Wayne has lost his father and all of his brothers. He managed to reunite with Red Hood briefly while trying to save humanity but lost him soon after to a surprise attack by Captain Marvel Junior. Even worse, Red Hood's manner of death was normal, there was no fixing that.

Darkseid Is a Yellow Lantern

Ultimately, this series is about grappling with death and how people react to sudden loss. Some rise above it, picking up the torch and living their best lives to honor those who came before. Others retreat into themselves, preferring to cope with the grief before trying to live again. The time has come though for everyone within the universe to make their peace with death.

Darkseid and his army will not stop until they have either conquered the universe or are defeated. The tragedy is inevitable for most, but if one lesson can be gleaned from all of this it is that the survivors are the ones who chose whether they give up or not. If they can apply all that they have learned over the last few years to this fight, then they stand a chance of winning.
