WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for DCeased: Hope at World's End #4 by Tom Taylor, Marco Failla, Rex Lokus and Saida Temofonte, available now.

The original DCeased miniseries kicked off with a shocking twist: Batman, the greatest superhero in the world and one of the only ones who could potentially find a way to save the world, was brutally killed by his own wards after they had been transformed into raging, zombie-like monsters by the Anti-Life virus. With Dick Grayson, Tim Drake and Barbara Gordon all dead, Damian Wayne was nearly the last member of the Bat-family alive (although not the last, as was later revealed in DCeased: Unkillables).

Although Batman was dead, the world wouldn't be without a Caped Crusader for long. Alfred gave Damian Wayne a special Bat-suit left for him by Bruce in case the worst should ever come to pass. After getting the suit, Damian began operating as the DC Universe's newest Dark Knight in DCeased #5.

However, in DCeased: Hope at World's End #4, it's revealed that when Damian hesitated to take the role, it was Superman who convinced him to suit up.

Damian Wayne is Bruce Wayne's pompous son. Although he's very young, he was trained by the League of Assassins and, later, Batman himself. For that reason, he sees himself as the greatest of all Robins and the only logical successor to the mantle of Batman. However, the old "be careful what you wish for" adage comes true when it finally comes time for him to actually follow in his father's footsteps. When he looks at the suit, Damian isn't so certain anymore.

With the suitcase containing his Bat-suit in hand, Damian is asked by Jonathan Kent if he will change his costume. "I... I don't know if I'm ready to," the young Robin answers. It's one thing to believe he's the one and only worthy successor, but it's another thing entirely to live up to the legacy of Batman. What's more, he also has to deal with the devastating loss of his father, something that is still very fresh.

Thankfully, Jon knows exactly who can help Damian: His own father, Clark Kent.

Clark approaches Damian and sits down to talk to him. He explains that Bruce believed Damian deserved this and that although he hates to admit it, Bruce was (almost) always right. Then, Clark continues by addressing Damian not as a father would his son, but more like an uncle. He knows that, at his age, sons aren't supposed to believe their fathers are always right -- it's only when they grow up that they realize how right their fathers truly were.

Superman is one of the people who was closest to Batman and it's likely he knew him better than anyone else. He understands him and, like the Dark Knight, he believes Damian is the one who should take up the mantle. It's these words of encouragement that show why Superman is the embodiment of hope in the DC Universe, even at a time when the world itself is dying.

After this heart-to-heart, Damian agrees to put on the suit and become the next Batman. It's a poignant moment between Clark and Damian, especially considering the close connection they both had to Bruce. It's also a quiet moment that shows exactly what the title of this DCeased miniseries promises: Hope at the end of the world.
