WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for DCeased #2 by Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Stefano Gaudiano, Rain Beredo, Saida Temofonte, on sale now.

DC's zombie apocalypse story continues in DCeased #2 with several more key deaths. After the infection of the Batman family in the first issue, the fate of Batman is finally decided. Others who met their unfortunate ends include Aquaman and the Joker, who may be about to target Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy next.

Aside from the final moments of the issue, where Alfred seemingly puts down the infected Dark Knight for good, there is one other death scene that is both gruesome and a little shocking. We witness the end of one of the greatest Green Lanterns of all time, but a new hero is chosen to wear the ring for the first time.

The Death of a Green Lantern

DCeased #2

At the time of the zombie outbreak, Green Arrow, Black Canary and Green Lantern Hal Jordan are enjoying a little camping in the woods. While Oliver and Dinah enjoy the outdoors, Hal feels out of his element. He goes back to the tent, bored of campfire sing-a-longs, and uses his phone. Unfortunately, this simple action causes the trip to take a terrifying and tragic turn.

Hal is transformed into a dangerous zombie-like version of himself, who immediately attacks his former friends. Despite holding the strongest weapon in the universe on his finger, the ring is unable to contain the infection. It is here that we see the major flaw of the Green Lanterns -- they are ultimately beholden to the whims of the wielder.

A fight breaks out between the three heroes, ending with Black Canary using her sonic scream to put Hal down for good. The interesting thing is that this isn't the first time a Green Lantern has fallen in an alternate reality story like this. Taylor's own run on the Injustice comics saw Kyle Rayner, John Stewart and Guy Gardner meet their ends, so he's no stranger to killing off Green Lanterns.

Black Canary Goes Green

DCeased #2

What was truly unexpected was who went on to inherit the ring from Hal Jordan. Scanning the nearby area for one who can overcome great fear, Black Canary is immediately chosen as the new Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. Not Green Arrow -- or even Superman, who showed up only moments later -- but Dinah Lance. It's some much needed firepower for the survivors, but it's also much more than that.

Despite a lack of physical powers, Black Canary has often been portrayed as one of the best female superheroes in the DC Universe. She's a skilled martial artist and crimefighter, a gifted leader and an overall force to be reckoned with. She has been a member of Justice League International, the chairperson of Justice League of America and the trainer for Batman's JLA team.

Turning Black Canary into the next Green Lantern is not just a cool plot twist, it's also DC confirming how gifted and accomplished she is at this point. Dinah is someone who has proven over and over again that she is able to overcome great fear, and now she is a Green Lantern for the first time in any continuity.

It's a cool thing to see for longtime fans of the character. And if you're familiar with the character's role in the Injustice comics, she may have some big moments coming. The Green Lantern ring is the strongest weapon in the universe, and now one of the strongest women on the planet wields it. Zombies beware.
