There are quite a few comic book couples we find ourselves re-exploring on romantic holidays like Valentine's Day, but none are quite as iconic as Superman and Lois Lane. The relationship has grown between Lois and Clark for over 80 years and has managed to survive one Crisis after another.
With such a storied history to their relationship, we've seen quite a few examples of romantic moments between the two intrepid reporters over the years. So today we wanted to highlight a few of our favorite romantic comic moments we've seen from Superman and Lois Lane.
10 SUPERMAN TAKES A WIFE
Action Comics #484 is memorable for a number of reasons, including the first comic appearance of the Mechanical Marauders/Monsters from the classic Max Fleisher animated shorts. However, the storyline also features the first official wedding of Superman and Lois Lane, though as it takes place before 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths, these are the Earth-2 versions of the characters.
After Clark Kent's memory of Superman is magically erased, Lois and Clark are married after a year without Superman. However, when his memories are restored he surprises Lois with a second Kryptonian wedding, making their marriage official in every way after decades of all kinds of fake marriages that never lasted.
9 SACRIFICED EVERYTHING FOR EACH OTHER
The Earth-2 Superman and Lois continued to play a part after sacrificing themselves to save a new universe in the first Crisis, as they would later return along with other multiversal remnants Alexander Luthor Jr. and Superboy-Prime in Infinite Crisis.
While the couple's return in Infinite Crisis was tainted by the manipulations of Luther and Superboy-Prime and ended in tragedy, it showed how much they meant to each other, and showed that while Superman may have been the inspiration to generations of heroes, Lois was the one who inspired him in the end.
8 ENGAGEMENT
Romance isn't always about flashy moments and big gestures, but the simplest act of realizing that you're with the one person you want to spend the rest of your life with. Clark's mother Martha was the first person to see that Clark and Lois's relationship had reached that level, and she snuck the Kent family engagement ring in his luggage after a visit.
Clark proposed rather matter-of-factly over dinner, and Lois asked for time to think about it as she was dealing with her mother's illness at the time. However, it was only later that night that Lois realized exactly what Clark had asked and accepted his proposal. Clark revealed his secret identity a short time after knowing they could never succeed with that secret between them.
7 THE RETURN OF SUPERMAN
Fans saw Lois express her love and grief memorably after Superman fell in battle with Doomsday during the "Death of Superman" storyline, though it wasn't until the character returned that we saw the real depth of that connection, which had been tested by the appearance of four replacement Supermen.
When the real deal returned, Lois was skeptical but could tell there was something different about him compared to the other Supermen. Following the returned Superman's battle with the other Supermen and his return to full strength, Lois jumped into his arms high above the streets of Metropolis without a doubt in her mind.
6 ONE NIGHT IN PARIS
Shortly after Clark returned to life, he decided to spontaneously fly Lois to Paris for a romantic day to celebrate his return, and rededicate himself to their relationship over his duties as Superman, which is a frequent issue that popped up in their relationship, understandably.
It was an incredibly romantic moment of spontaneity that some people only dream of, but it was unfortunately horribly tainted by the death of reporter Cat Grant's son while the couple was away, which Clark felt responsible for due to his random romantic gesture.
5 THE WEDDING
Clark and Lois had a bit of a rocky engagement, and for a time they separated while Lois traveled the world as a foreign correspondent and Clark dived into his work as Superman with the Justice League. When Lois returned she accepted his marriage proposal for a final time, and the two were wed in Superman: The Wedding Album.
Lois and Clark's wedding was full of the people in their lives celebrating their rather rushed wedding and is one of the few comic book weddings to go off without a hitch, bringing the post-Crisis Lois and Clark together as husband and wife for the first time.
4 THE HONEYMOON
When Lois and Clark were finally married, Clark had lost his powers as Superman due to the Final Night event, and while they were on their honeymoon in Hawaii he was kidnapped by a criminal Lois had been investigating and beaten for information.
Lois quickly went into action to rescue her powerless husband in an action-filled attack on the people who kidnapped Clark. The issue ended with a passionate kiss as they dangled from a helicopter in a scene perfect for the big screen.
3 STARTED A FEW DIFFERENT FAMILIES
As we've seen versions of Lois & Clark together for decades, we've also seen different versions of their family. The Earth-2 Lois and Clark didn't have any children of their own, but they did raise Superman's cousin Kara Zor-L/Karen Starr, who would become the hero known as Power Girl.
Post-Crisis Lois and Clark adopted a Kryptonian child they would name Chris Kent who would later be revealed as the son of General Zod before sacrificing himself in battle with his father. Finally, the Rebirth era Superman and Lois have a superpowered son named Jon, and all of their children are just further examples of their love for each other and their families.
2 SUPER DATE NIGHT
The Flashpoint event greatly altered the DC Universe and effectively erased Lois and Clark's romantic relationship in the New 52 universe, though the DC Rebirth event returned the fan-preferred versions with their new son Jon to the continuity, and we began to see romantic moments from the couple again.
Simple things like going out for a secret identity free couple date with Bruce Wayne/Batman and Selina Kyle/Catwoman highlight the couple in a rare moment of freedom with friends and serves as one of the couple's most subtly romantic moments of the last decade.
1 BEST PRESENT EVER
Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's All-Star Superman features an alternate version of the character based on the original Earth-2 hero following a battle at the sun that overexposed him to solar radiation which would eventually result in his death. He decided to reveal his secret identity to Lois Lane and created a very unique birthday present for her.
Superman used his DNA to create a serum that gave Lois his abilities for 24 hours, and he fashioned her an outfit. She became Superwoman and shared a day's worth of adventures so she could experience life in his world. It was a beautiful moment from a beautiful series, and Superman's gift to Lois makes every other romantic gift pale in comparison.
